Training & Nutrition - What are you doing.. other than cycling?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm curious what sports people are doing other than cycling for winter training.
I'm been primarily running, but doing a fair amount of swimming too.

Primarily cross country skiing for aerobic activity, with some treadmill jogging and trainer rides. Weight training in between.

Well, we don't actually get winter here. However, I do occasionally do some running (geez, haven't been for a run in ages, maybe I will this week). After all, with 42km of beaches to run on....

Weightlifting and rowing. Well, kayaking.
I also bungee jump a lot, but not in the Winter. Nothing quite like jumping off a bridge. It's better than drugs.

It's warm/hot most of the time here, lots of rain especially in November/December. The weather allows me to be active all year round, doing whatever I like other than winter sports. I find winter sports really cool.
Running is what I do most of the time other than cycling. Now I'm concentrating a lot more on running than cycling. Probably because I've been in a all boys school from 13-16 and now I'm in a co-ed school. So now I'm trying to impress the girls with the leg that I've built up with cycling and transferring it to running.
I just ran like yesterday going like a 9 min mile pace, average HR at 179 bpm, max 191. Not bad since like I've been running endurance runs at a slow 12 min pace at an average HR of 164, max 171. What do you guys think about that? Think I can run faster??

Gym time. :)
I'm riding on the trainer (:( ), and lifting this winter. It's the same as every winter...

i've been getting to the gym about 3 times a week (after almost 8 months of infrequent), plus i've been running maybe once a week and then riding still - the daily commute plus either 1 or 2 rides a week --- we've had a fair amount of snow but i was able to ride even when it was -10C and we had 10" new snow.
as soon as we get a little more snow in the mountains i will be doing lots of ski touring -- where you use skins for traction on the bottom of skis and climb UP the mountain and then ski back down. it's great training and i hope to again do the race i did last year which has 1950m of vertical (from the base of the ski area to the summit, ski half way down, then go back up and then ski down). the race is in early March so i've got a lot of training to do as i ahven't been running much...
should do more xc skiing, but there's only sometimes enough snow right out my door and if i have to take the train i might as well do ski touring...
indoor cycling 6 x per week (I teach spinning).
when the snow permits I try to run on the weekends or I'll go downhill or xcountry skiing. No road or mtn biking due to the weather. Bummer!

I used to run alot before I got into cycling. Actually that's the reason I ride now. Back when I was 13 I could run 10 miles in 56 min. along with a 5 min mile. As luck would have it 1 week after the first race I got a stress fracture in my lower right leg...no exersize for 12 weeks :(:(. To make a long story short here I am riding the bike and am happier than ever. I love riding 10 times more than running and I'm better at it. As far as what I do for x-trating, I have soccer practice 3 hrs a day which will end in 2-3 weeks depending on how far we get in the playoffs and I will finally be able to focus on training everyday and racing in the summer. :D :D :D

Being we have fairly warm weather 50 weeks out of 52- rarely feel need to do anything as intense as cycling, ever... Do have my home Total Gym 100. Use it about once a week..
Mostly I am religious about my daily exercises- ride or not. That consists of 100 sit ups and 35-50 push ups.. Not much, I know. With only, a liposuction in the beer depository regions- I would be in great shape..

I love running. It's my first love, athletically.
I'm currently in training for London Marathon. 80 days to go. Now on 40 miles per week with 16 mile long run. I will get to 50 miles per week with 20 mile long runs.

I've been cycling harder now than I did last summer. In addition to that of course, sailing, which is quite a workout. We like to pretend we are a race team, so everything we do on the boat is quick and precise.
Now that its winter, diving is at its best, so I am doing that next weekend. No more plankton in the water, so visibility will be good.
i dont mind running but am definately not a natural runner. i do find though that when i run and my heart beat is in no mans land, i get on my bike the next day for a ride and i find the ride so much easier. Perhaps because my heart rate was so much higher the day before, i dont know.
About your hearts aerobic range. is it between 65% and 85% of your maximum heart rate? and is your maximum heart rate calculated by 220BPM - your age??
thanks

Sailguy. That is right, you are a diver.. What is Monterey your big destination? I talk to divers who moved down here from the Bay area- all the sightings of shark in that cold water.. Probably exagerrated..
But anyway, I just do not find diving a real form of exercise. had some great dives; but you must do other things for keep up to your potential physical demands for a dive..
Guess, in part, I am obsessed with riding across North America. Diving does not prepare me for that.. So cycling gets my biggest passion.. Cycling helps my diving but diving has little impact upon my cycling. Can't dive enough to call it aerobic training for your overall health..Well, most of us can't . So I sort of discount it as a physical exercise regimen..
Back to the point about algae in the ocean.. In Southern California we have enough islands way out from the shore- we can go out diving in the warmer months and escape the green stuff.. Up there you have to stick close to shore, I guess.?

Usually we dive off the shore, so its usually a pretty good surface swim to get to deeper water. I find it tiring to swim through the kelp with all the gear on. Yeah, I don't dive enough to really make it part of the training but I count it on the days I do it instead of cycling. Lord knows I always go home totally exhausted. I do agree that boat dives are very easy in comparison and I don't think I would count those.
Considering I ride rain or shine, I don't do too much in addition to cycling. I was doing spinning and kickboxing, but now that I have been riding with a group on the weekends, I don't want to over exert myself esp w/ the commuting rides.
Currently I am getting myself ready for my first century, so I have been adding hills to my commute, in addition to now riding with the group.
As for sharks, I have never seen one locally. Only when I dove in the Bahamas. And i can only assume that the frigid water in monterey burns an extra calorie or two in the fight to stay warm.
I dove in Catalina last summer.. that was fun. Of course I sailed there from Marina Del Rey first ;) I would love to dive Catalina more often.

Sailguy.. I urge all to dive San Clemente Island,if the weather and currents are right - to the north west of China Hat.. I rarely have not dived there and NOT seen either white or black sea bass. They are truly a sight.. Huge.. California's answer to a Manta Ray.. Catalina is nice... San Clemente is a little more virgin diving..San Clemente Is used for Naval operations, so not sure about private craft and what arrangement need be made..
It was San Clemente Island where I decided to pick up my pace with my cycling.. That is where I was swimming near the southern point and got into a current . Wow.. If I had not been able to grab onto a Sea Palm, I would have been out to sea.. When I got out of the worst of the current- I still had to kick like hell. That was worse than the worst hill I have ever done on a bike..
Overall, diving does not exhaust me the way it used to. I know don't be overconfident.. But then, I find shore dives not to my liking about here- and those are the most strenous, I know..
ps- Sailguy. I am getting myself ready for my fourth 100 mile day.. I think at the start we have about 10 miles of a 3,400 ft. climb.. Don't forget the power gels..

Wreight lifting (up to 5x/wk) and spinning (first 2x/wk, now 3x/wk).. i also do the odd session on a hometrainer, mostly 24 mins sometimes 2x24 mins (there are 24 bars on the display, so 12 or 24 mins is easiest to monitor)

:) Snowshoeing and back-country skiing. I am just starting to try some Ice climbing.
I play hockey 4 times a week, and do a simple weight routine 2 times a week. In the winter, when cycling is limited I try to run twice a week. Not enough time !!!!!!
Working the right and left arms powerlifting pints of beer. My arms are strong and my middle is growing! :D :(
