Foo - I'm very upset.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
A BIKEFORUM member broke into my account and removed my avatar!! I know this cause it says I was logged in at 7pm lastnight. I didn't have computer access lastnight and I was sick. I'm VERY PISSED about this person. This is SOOO WRONG and I'm pissed. This person is very computer savvy. He also has gone into my email accounts etc.
Do you consider this ILLEGAL??

Hope it gets straightened out by the mods or joe. That is messed up!

I wonder if there is a connection between snowy's attacker and blondie's attacker. Amazing how stupid people can act when they can hide behind the anonymity afforded by the internet.

is BDG's stalker and Snowy's stalker the same stalker? You don't have to name them, just tell us what their name rhymes with. For example, I could say something like the name of the person I'm being stalked by rhymes with "Resident Push". :D

No connections... I know who this did to me.. I dont know him "know him" but I used to know him in a net kinda way.. no connections.
i didnt read the part where he got thru her emails, that I would be BULL**** about, that's a right of privacy he just invaded!! maybe there is a way to find out his IP adress from when he logged on your account? and... if it happend to snowy, who says she will be the only one he will hack into.

Hmmm...nope, that doesn't help. You can always PM me w/ your stalker's name. Then I'll send my legions of killer-chickens into the night to destroy him!
I have changed my password ALOT. Also, I couldn't even log in this morning I had to change my password just to logged in.

Long passwords like
213l5iu34ySDFGAsx&%^*Uea
:D
Then just tell your browser to remember your password :p and checkmark the 'remember me' :D (Only if you're the only one who ever uses your computer :p) and of course eliminates remote posting unless you have a pda or something :p
BUT!!!!! Virtually unhackable :D
Out of curiousity, why are both of you keeping these lowlife's names a secret? If they're that kind of person, you should let us know so they can be shunned by all.
Not being a lawyer, I would venture to guess that hacking your BF account isn't illegal (though Joe might have the standing to file charges) but hacking your personal computer (if that's where your keep your emails) is larceny and chargeable.

As far as I'm concerned it's illegal. And depending upon what laws you apply it "is or can be illegal." I mean heck you're not supposed to heckle or insult anybody online without stating your full name, and address or some bs.
And yes people have been taken to court, both successfully and unsuccessfully for it.

humm.. Id say it's like saying.. breaking into a house to steal a picture frame is not breaking the law as in stealing a tv from that house.. breaking and entering is illegal no matter what you did once you went that far, just as hacking is no matter what you did in there.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner
People's and legislation's failure to draw this distinction and to go after it is basically the same reason why, as much as we love to, the fact that downloading a song or paying 5 cents to some russian for a song is the same as going into a store and stealing the cd.
It's gaining illegal access to something with a malicious intent.

Yes, but....
By hacking your BF account, they're really hacking Joe's/BF's computer not yours.
If you use Outlook (or a similar email client) then they are hacking your computer and it would be illegal (at least as far as I understand these things). If you use hotmail, yahoo, gmail etc, then they aren't hacking YOUR computer and they haven't committed a crime against you. The host perhaps, but not you.
Splitting hairs, I realize and until the laws catch up with technology, that's the way it'll wind up being.
(Still don't understand why you guys are protecting these potential criminals!)
The mods have contacted me.
Regardless if this is illegal or not, its wrong and all of us here don't deserve this. We all come here with a certain level of rules and how to treat one another. I hope he won't be allowed to post here ever again.

I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but, "What the **** is wrong with people!?!" I mean, really! I've got way better things to do than harrass people via the internet. If they're professional criminals hacking into bank accounts and stuff I could see putting forth some effort, but, c'mon--sending hatemail, breaking into email accounts.... That's just lame, got-no-life crap.

because this guy did not hack into my account, it's very personal.. he wont be after you, he will be after me with personal haressment and personal attacks or low blow, all I am looking at is someone who aress me via yahoo messenger, all his reference were made from posts he read on bf and my race results he went fishing for. he didnt hack into my account or used bf messengers or posts to arrass me, he only used bf to stalk me and races thru the net to stalk me.. I have to watch myself here, how much do I fule him? what is it going to give to me when I print his name on here? that could be seen as aressment on my part or I could get the boot off of here for naming someone or worst I could make him so mad that he would do more to me and take this aressment further then the net.. Im watching out for myself and he is not after you guys, but me.. I would say it if I knew anyone was at threath.

actually, it's like stealing a picture frame you put up at Starbuck's for everyone to see vs. breaking into your house to steal your t.v.
but anyhoo....

OK, I can understand the fueling the fire part. But to say you'd be harrassing him, I think, is wrong. If you can substantiate what's happened and you only post facts as they happened to you, then there's really no harrassment; just a statement of fact.
The other option you have and I recommend you take is to turn over all the logs and files (you do keep these, right?) to the FBI. What he is doing is explicitly against a federal law recently passed to safeguard against internet stalking. Might not go anywhere, but having a couple of guys in black suits show up at his door may make him re-think his actions.

This sucks hardcore :(
Seriously, if there is anything I can do, or at least try at, send me a holler.
Oh, and really, really beef up your passwords....all of them, preferably from a computer you normally do not use. And then go through your daily computer with a fine-tooth comb. They had to get your passwords somehow. Using passwords based on your life or preferences is a very bad idea....the best passwords should have nothing to do with you at all...preferably have no meaning at all. Minimum 8 characters, mixed letters and numbers, and consider using capital letters in it as well (just not the very first character...this is typical and very predictable).
Passwords are the U-locks of the computer world...they all can be defeated, but how long does it take? That's all up to the maker of the password.

yes, i did copie and pasted everything he said just in case. I dont think he will do anymore, this guy is a coward and he is probably reading all of these posts as well, he knows his charades are out now. Thanks for the advice, if I do hear anymore from him ( I did warn him that this was stalking and to never do this again) I wont hesitate into taking actions.

I've seen similar things happen elsewhere. I guess I'm naive in the ways of the internet culture, but I fail to see to point in someone doing something like this to someone else.
I suspect there was a TOS violation both here and elsewhere. I have no idea what was said, whether they were true or not, but slander/defamation of character has legal consequences regardless the environment. I believe the requirement be that the slanderous remarks be made in public (which a message board would be). If remarks made are sexual in nature and make you feel uncomfortable, you have to advise the other person that they make you uncomfortable...you have to afford them the oportunity to correct their behavior. If they continue with the remarks, that is sexual harassment. If reported to the particular web site, if they do not take action then its possible that both the offender and the web site can be held legally responsible.
Bottom line...don't take crap like this sitting down. Go change all of your passwords. Stand up for yourself. I hope you can resolve this soon.

06-09-06, 01:52 PM
Peoples definition of stealing.
Like i said the same reason why so many people think its okay to downlaod songs off of the net or pay some russian 5 cents versus why stealing a cd from wal-mart is different.
Both are stealing.
But to some people they either are a "different type of stealing" or "are not stealing"
Well I just found out that this person went into EVERY account I have on the internet and messed it up so I can't get into it. Its almost like IDENTITY THEIF!!! He is acting like me and changing all of my information. I have spent the better half of my day fixing all of this. I just have to ask WHY???? WHY are people so mean who claim to be SOO happy in their lives???????

Well at least Merton and I have an understanding. We harass each other openly and with no abandon, in front of everybody. Huh, Merty?
I just don't understand why someone would do that. Yes, to some people it's just an avatar but I know that it was Snowy's bike and she had the wheels changed to be snowflakes. And that is special. Is there anyway that you could put it back on, Snowy? :o
