It looks kind of cute, but hasn't been getting good reviews in the press. SF Chronicle says it would be great for a 10 min. short film but not for a 116 min. movie.
My question is why does the mainstream media/entertainment complex continue to celebrate the car culture? If this movie came out in the fifties or sixties I could possible understand that. Another movie review says that at $3/gal for gas and increasing traffic/sprawl it just feels so wrong.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that the the car/oil companies got together and either helped bankroll the film and/or acted as technical advisors. As more people are starting to use bicycles and public transportation they got to make damn sure to keep the car addiction going, especially the very young, to get them on the "right way of thinking".

Sad irony is, the creative director of Pixar died in a car crash recently...
I don't care about impressioning young minds with a car movie. With all the violent video games, movies, and tv shows kids are watching, this is a step in the right direction if you ask me. Gasoline is running out, and in 50 years, like it or not, cars will still be on the road. Unlike now, they will be using renewable and non-poluting fuel sources, so I don't think there is any harm in getting the next generation into cars. If little kids love fast cars, but they are to young to go see the fast and the furious, this movie looks perfect. Besides, any movie about race cars with Paul Newman and a tribute character for Steve McQueen is good by me.
Speeking of cars, can anybody ID the guy in my new avatar?

Avatars are littler than postage stamps, and my eyes are bad. Is it Carroll Shelby? My embarassing first guess was Cal Worthington LOL.
My wife picked the movie this week. Next week we go to see Cars :D
If little kids love fast cars, but they are to young to go see the fast and the furious,
as with anyone who loves fast cars, i'm more concerned with their ability to see cyclists.
It's a movie for kids, for Christ's sake.
I like the looks of "Over the Hedge" that racoon is damn cute
Fast machines are really fun; however, upon seeing the trailer of "Cars" my first reaction was disgust. It is just another movie brainwashing our youth to believe that "you are what you drive" encouraging people to overextend themselves financially on some POS vehicle that they believe will catapult them up the social ladder.
Is it Carroll Shelby?
Sure is.
Well, I actually SAW "Cars" Friday and I liked it. Actually laughed out loud more than once (OK, so I'm easily amused).
Maybe not so much for the storyline, but the charaterizations, car jokes and images that come at you were fast and furious. I'm sure I missed a lot of the more subtle jokes, so it will definitely be on my "to buy" list for further review.
...but it had a good message regarding loyalty, humility and friendship. OK, maybe it's a bit sappy for some tastes. I think they did a good job of making Lightning a bit of a jerk, but not so much of a jerk you didn't still like him. Any references to present sports hereoes are, I'm sure, unintentional. :D
It gave my son and I something to discuss on the way home.
Oh, and a tip to all you SUV haters...you have to stay for the very end, when "Sarge" challenges a quartet of SUV's to a 20 mile off-road run. SO TRUE! Pixar nailed that scene.
Disclamer: Yes, I own an SUV and yes, it has been off-road and has the body damage to prove it.
Actually, I thought the last five minutes or so were the funniest.
My son and I give it two "fenders up".

Hmmmm.
If this was the message of the film, then I completely missed it.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've been checking out a little bit of the songs that came from the soundtrack. I like this one John Mayer song called "Route 66." I just stumbled upon it while I was listening to other John Mayer songs on Napsterlinks. if you guys have heard the soundtrack to this movie, what do you guys think of it? BTW, I'm gonna go see the movie this weekend so I can get caught up on what everyone's saying about the movie.

I thought this was a really cute movie. A little too long but overall it was really good.
I loved seeing Click and Clack (Tom & Ray) from Cartalk in it!!!!
I loved that movie, for someone who self-taught himself about cars and racing it was pretty cool to see some racing greats (Richard Petty, Michael Schumacher) come together with other mainstream actors to make a car movie that both makes kids and the adults that were dragged in to see it, laugh. In addition, the movie was changed for every main language, and in Great Britain, too. I just wish Fernando Alonso was in the USA version. I enjoyed seeing the Hudson Hornet make an appearance as well. You know you're pretty bad when you can name every car you see in an animated movie.
Two thumbs up. PIT STOP!
