Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Anyone HERE build their own frame?

Hey buddies,
This is obviously a "Framebuilders"-themed question, but I want to know...
Have any of you taken on a track build? Anyone riding their own creation? Lastly, anyone snap a chainstay off the bottom bracket shell while fanning out a hockey stop?
Just curious... I want to hear stories.

I'm doing the research now to braze a frame in a few months. I'm thinking of going with a standard track geometery probably from a DeBernardi or something similar.

There have been a few postings lately of those who have done thier own builds, some really cool stuff.

The Locust has built and is building his own frame.
Among others.

mcatano built one for his ladyfriend and is building his own soon.

yeah i have done one and need to update my build log with the progress on my new bike. racing/summer/other projects have gotten in the way of me finishing it in a timely fasion... so i guess i am now a true framebuilder since i cant even keep a deadline that i set myself.

BTW look at #2941 in my sig for pics of my first frame.

built one at UBI that i've been riding the **** out of. had couplers put on it by mike desalvo. it's the ****, IMHO.

i'll probably build one more this winter. right now i'm working on some crazy frankenbikes.

I'm in the process of building one. I took a brazing class at the local votech place. Bought all the tubes and silver and flux. Drew up plans. There is a lot of filing in my future.

I think Don Walker built a frame for himself once.

I'm in the process of building my first frame. It's coming along great. It's amazing how much you can learn from frameforum and the paterek manual. I definitely don't have the proper tools to build a bicycle frame, but I'll make it work. The whole project is so much fun. I don't mind tedious work, so I can handle building a frame. So far I've invested no more than $300 in raw material and around $100 in tools. I'll post photos in Flickr when evereything is done.

That turned out great. Did you paint it, or is it clearcoat only?

Thanks! It's painted - sort of a dark metallic grey that gets a bit of a purple hue when the light hits it.

UBI does a school in Oregon and has lots of satisfied students in their class. Might also want to check out Hot Tubes in Massachussetts. The guy does frame painting too, so you could inquire about paying to learn to paint.

I just finished the UBI class. Super fun, plus there's a nice skatepark just down the road. I built a frame for a friend. Track, but has room for fenders. I put water bottle mounts in the bottom of the fork legs, seatstay bridge, track ends, and the backside of the seat tube to facilitate fender mounting. Still needs some cleanup and finish work.Bare steel right now. Note the columbus track ends.......two left sides was all they had left in stock.. hehe.Imperfection is perfection, as RS would say.

Those pics are awesome! HAHA! I can't believe that UBI ran out of track dropouts and you had to use 2 left dropouts instead. No prob though. It gives it some character and a nice story. Check out that girl's website. I found it and it's got some rad resources on there for jigs and tools.

Oh btw, what's with the threaded hole in the left rear track dropout? That for a rear rack? And how's that work for the drive side since you used a left dropout instead of a right dropout. The threading would be on the inside and totally backwards, no?

maybe ubi couldn't order enough track ends. in the class i took, i think 6 people used track ends and one used old horizontal campy dropouts. everyone wants a single speed.

All of the those frames look great. Congrats. I've always wanted to try building one.
