"The rope broke and he fell" to the riverbed about 30 feet below, Ginther said.

The man then slit his wrists, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported, and the bicyclist later hit the body and fell off the bike.

Damn. So far all I've been worried about is hitting squirrels and rabbits!

Wow - I'll have to ride by there tomorrow morning to see what the trail looks like now.

edit: wait, if it happened on the riverbed, what the heck was a cyclist doing down there? There's way too much crap in that area, and a lot of big piles of dirt (not much water).

MTBing, maybe?

You'd have to be MTBing. The river starting around there transitions from a concrete channel (think LA River like in Grease) to a concrete channel with tons (literally) of debris collected from rains. Some people do ride in the river bed for some odd reason, even though there's a nice MUP along it. I see BMX and skater kids using the steep sides of the river as ramps, and it looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

Odd are they are mtn biking. A nice MUP is about as boring as watching paint dry if you like mtn biking... avoid them at (almost) all costs! Before, when all I did was mtn bike, a MUP was a boring transit point between real trails :o These days, even though I still dont use them - too much glass, I will take the road - I still see them as a dull, but effective, means of getting around.

A bicyclest "later" hit the body? How long was it laying there? I ride SART all of the time. How do you not see a body in the middle of the trail and hit it?

If at first you don't succeed
