I need some advice on a new set of tires. My stock tire/rim configuration is Continental SportContact 700x28c on Sun Ringle Rims DS2 (32 hole). I'd like to put a pair of Maxxis Detonators, which are 700x23c, on these rims. I was under the impression if a bike uses 700 tires on its rims, any 700 x whatever would work and that I'd only need a compatible tube for the tire. Is this a bad assumption? By the way, can the tube in my current 700x28c tire work inside a 700x23c? Thanks for any help you can give.

If that's the rim extrusion that I'm thinking of it's 23mm wide and should work fine.

Tubes may or may not be OK. Tubes will generally fit a range of tire sizes. If your current tubes are designed to fit 23 to 28mm tires, you'll obviously be fine. If they are designed to fit 28 to 38mm tires you might have a hard time cramming all of that tube inside of your smaller 23mm tires.

the answer is NO. the inside width of the rim is 17.5mm so the smallest i could probably go is 25mm. that is a great link by the way.

The Detonators are also available in 28mm, and they are a narrow 28mm compared to many other 700x28c tyres.

Why do you want to go to 23mm? (People have differnt reasons)

It's cosmetic more than anything. Wanted to get colored tires (cheaper than buying colored rims) and it seems like the only ones that have some are 700x23c. I liked the red stripe Detonators which only come in 23. Looks like Maxxis stopped making them in 28 because I only see them in 23 and 25 here:
