If I make a tin foil hat to keep the sun off of my radar detector, will it interfere with it? I am worried that it will overheat.

Also, please discuss any alien conspiracy theories in this thread.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard today. Why don't you just leave the damn car with the AC on.

dude, the black detector is on the black dashboard with sun shining on it all day. The car could be 40 degrees and it would still get hot.

Your car needs more AC.

Yeah I do this already, I'm wondering about during driving. I'm not sensing much support for the tin foil hat idea

what you need is air movement. put the radar detector on the roof and it'll stay cool.

My naive suspicion is that it may interfere with your detection range. After all, if you reflect away any radar signals coming at your detector, then your detector can't detect them!

In other random ramblings... Some little green men came knocking at my door last night explaining that aliens are not real. When I asked them what they were in light of their statement, they told me they're just one of us. Umm, okay, whatever.

Radar detectors have more use that just the ability to speed with impunity. They certainly don't keep you from getting tickets if you choose to speed. I'll let you figure the rest out for yourself.

Ah, yes. Look into the light, ladies and gentlemen. This was simply a discussion about the efficacy and ethics of radar detectors. It had nothing, repeat NOTHING to do with aliens, unidentified flying objects, or any other such nonsense. Please...go about your business.

y'all got it all wrong. . .
according to the family I interviewed ( i used to do psych evals in a past life),
the tin foil reflected gamma rays that the CIA was beaming all over the place
to control the population.
Best woven into the hair as opposed to an actual hat. . .

this was in the Wash. D.C. area and, well. . . they sold lots of Reynolds foil. . .think about it.

How do you power a radar detector on your bicycle?

bennyk
06-17-06, 02:35 PM
The pointed foil hat certainly has gamma-ray-deflection advantages, but it can give away your location in certain situations, so it may not be the right choice for everyone. It is less effective, for instance if you're hiding behind the sofa/behind a hedge, etc.

This was simply a discussion about the efficacy and ethics of radar detectors.
It wasn't even that, it was a simple question about the radar-detection consequences of shielding the device from heat. I am not even remotely interested in your ethical opinion about radar detectors; I have obviously already made up my mind about the issue and am bored to explain my reasoning.

ufo warning system i did not see that that episode of myth busters

But they did bust the myth that aluminum foil would affect police radar.

With advances in nanotechnology, new and better deflection devices will become reality in most of our lifetimes. The anechoic coatings that help to prevent radar detection, unfortunately are not sufficiently effective at diverting or shielding the coated object from the effects of the electro-magnetic radiation. They are also a bit too bulky for practical use, and are quite expensive as well. Using nano-engineering, it is thought that the volume of material needed to scatter the reflected energy, as well as the volume needed to provide an effective barrier can be reduced by up to 90%. This can permit protection devices to be far less conspicuous - which will also help to reduce the social stigma that unenlightened majority impose upon the people who understand, and wish to protect themselves from the far-reaching consequences of the massive bombardment of EMR in the environment.

ain't BS fun? :D

If you look at the instructions that came with it, they should tell you the operating temp range for that piece of equipment. I don't think the heat is going to be a problem. As for the tin foil hat, it may shield the device from the rays, but the interior of the car is going to get just as hot from the greenhouse effect.

Uh...yeah. Chill out there, buddy. You didn't ask for an opinion, and I didn't give you one. (Apparently, you either have been questioned about this before, however, or have certain qualms about it, since you seem to be so touchy on the subject.)

Anyway, what I did was make a (everybody together now!) J-O-K-E, playing off what TexasGuy was saying. I have no actual interest in your or anybody else's radar detector.

if I seem annoyed, it's because there wasn't really even one sincere or marginally helpful post in this thread until after my last response. It's a mystery to me why people even bother posting in a thread if they want to talk about something completely unrelated to the OP.

are you sure it isn't specially modified heavy drinking water? genetically designed to melt off alien skin? but not damage real people when they drink it? or spray it over the room by hitting it with baseball bats?
