Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bottle Cages: Rivnut or nutsert installation

Have any of you installed rivnuts or nutserts for a bottle cage onto your SS/Fixie that didn't come with cage mounts? If so, any problems? Or a smooth installation and glad you did it (as opposed to the other alternatives...jersey pocket, strap-on cage, etc)?

If you measure accurately and position them on the centerline (a ruler is really all it takes), it's a breeze. The tool is pretty straightforward. Note that there are different sizes and styles (though all have the same 5 mm inside thread) and some are a little better than others about not loosening up slightly so they spin when you try to unscrew your bottle cage bolt. This isn't a problem, because you just use some needlenose pliers to hold the rivnut while you remove the bolt, but I'd still try to avoid it. A framebuilder or a good shop can do it for about $35. It's much better than strap-on cages, because the latter really encourage rust or scratches (and depending on your bike, the straps can get in the way of tires or fenders). Always use antiseize compound in the rivnut when you mount the bottle cage.

not to be a jerk, but most people on this forum keep their water in their bags rather then mess up the lines of their bikes.

and then there's the people on this forum that like to reach down for a bottle of water, rather than flipping their bag around, opening it up, and awkwardly digging around to find their frosty beverage. not to mention that a bottle in a bag gets hotter faster than a bottle in a cage.

me thinks that some of you guys worry too much about aesthetic.

i will openly admit that I think a bike without water bottle cages looks cleaner, but thats not my primary reason for going without them.

my last bike had a water bottle cage and anytime I left anything in it, it would get stolen. empty vitamin/spring water bottles stolen every day which would grumpify me because then I'd have to go out and spend another dollar on another disposable bottle that someone would steal just to see how far they could throw it every time I went into a place for a moment.

got to the point where I'd end up taking the bottle out and putting it in my bag with me to prevent theft. then, of course, I'd forget to put it back in the cage and if I needed a drink I'd still have to do exactly what I do now.

except now my bike looks better too.

I was wrong about that.

I still don't have nor want a water bottle cage, and if you take a gander through the pictures thread, you'll see that most people on this forum are of the same mind.
