Ok here's the deal.
I have 105 8spd cranks---#1056 Double
I am still using the 8spd HG-90 rear cassette out back with both the 8spd deraiileurs and an SRAM PC58 chain.

Can I swap to Ultegra 9spd cranks(#FC 6500 Double) and chainrings without any chain tracking problems?

I was told there may be a problem because the spacing between the chainrings is smaller on the 9spd and may cause a tracking issue there.

The guys at the bike shops have told me there shouldn't be any problems, but I'm just not sure.

I'd like more input on this. I also looked at Shimano's compatibility chart but couldn't find anything on it.
To me that would suggest that they don't want you to do it.

What's up???

Sounds like a go to me. Should be no problem with the cranks. Chainwheels might have a slightly shorter life span but the difference will be subtle. Tracking difference will be in the mm neighborhood.

Ya know I could get some shim material and cut what I need???

Wonder how much of a difference we are talking about, and which sprocket would need to be spaced???
