During this mornings ride I had a woman in a BMW convertible apologize to me after racing me 50ft to a stop sign. It was completely unsolicited as I had made no gestures or indications that what she did was stupid. (and one of my pet peeves) I'll give her 1 point for realizing that the move was stupid completely on her own, and extra credit for taking responsibility for it. Maybe, just maybe, she won't do it again.

The funny came a little later as I was crossing a fairly busy street on a four lane road with a green light. I was all the way over to the right, and the left lane was completely clear. Yet some nitwit in an SUV decided to buzz me in the middle of the intersection. I didn't see him coming, but I had moved over a little farther to the right in the intersection to miss some debris in the road, so he had to come over farther than he planned to buzz me. And what he didn't realize is that the road shifted over slightly, maybe a foot on the other side of the intersection. The shift isn't a problem for a bike going 12-15 mph, but it proved to be too much for 5000lbs of SUV going about 50mph. He smacked the curb really hard with both right side wheels and flattened those cast aluminum wheels nicely. I mean the tires were shredded, but he ruined the wheels as well. I wouldn't be surprised if there was extensive suspension damage as well.

I pulled over to help the guy out (actually I was considering dragging him out and beating him senseless) knowing of course that there was little I could do in the way of help. But I wanted to reinforce the fact that I'm a living, breathing person to this guy that apparently just tried to kill me. Of course I acted like I thought it was all just a big accident. I think he had a pretty big slice of humble pie. And maybe, just maybe, next time he has the opportunity to harass a biker he'll remember that some of them aren't all bad.

You should have beat the flucker.
Then he'd have broken wheels and a broken nose.

(Ya, ya, ya.. I'm kidding, but WTF is up with some arseholes?)

Wow, that has to be one of the faster karma rebounds (the SUV, I mean) :D

I would have just rode by and said something like "Was it worth it, ****head?".

Good on you for taking the high road with the SUV driver... perhaps, just perhaps, he might have actually learned something.

What did the SUV driver say/do when you helped him out?

What did the SUV driver say/do when you helped him out?

Probably the following: "It's your fault. You avoided being run over, consequently, I wrecked my vehicle on the curb."

I'd just smile, shake my head and keep riding. You try to hit me but instead wreck your car and not a scratch on my head? I'll take it and ride on my way. That fool was intent on ruining your ride, but I'd say he made it. :D

Damn man wish we all had your karma, So far no major problems on the road for me.

The bike lanes are full of debris and glass so I would rather ride in the road but I stick to the bike lane for the sake of things. Mind if I add my lil' story in? its not worthy of its own topic.

Only accident (near) I have had so far was testing out my new headlight/tail light riding down a main road in the wide as heck bike lane. Dinotte Ultra 5 and a Cateye LD-1000 so I was very visable. A SUV comes flying by me just to make a right hand turn infront of me to a parking lot I had to grab a handfull of brakes to not slam into the side of there SUV or go under the rear tire in a worst case scenario. It may have been best to just keep riding but I had to turn around and go see what kind of ass would try to kill me, it was two spanish girls and I think I nearly scared them to death when I came up to there window and knocked hard enough to nearly break it. They said they didnt know if I was turning or going striaght... what a lame excuse as they would have hit me eather way and that also confirms they saw me.

One or two more run-ins like that and you may find me in the road instead of on the bike lane, it seems safer to me in alot of ways and I would avoid the road debris.

Back on topic, your run in with the SUV.. wow that would have just made my day to see sombody actually get what they deserve.

Now that's what I call a story (or two.) I wonder what kind of insanity made that SUV driver treat you that way. On the other hand, how often do people respond to offer help to their adversaries like you did?

What would he have told his family at the dinner table? "I tried to scare a cyclist to death, but instead I wrecked the car, Honey."

Oh, I'm sure his version of the incident was a lot different than mine. I was probably weaving in and out of traffic or blowing the red light or something.

He didn't say much to me when I stopped, he was mostly upset about crashing his $60k+ car.

But what's that saying about getting the last laugh?
