Our city has recently unveiled a new plan for our main drag that will include a 3 - tiered road way that is based, in part, on a similar 3 - tiered road way in Eugene, Org.

The 4 lane road will have a raised level for cyclists and a sidewalk separated by a curb from the bike lane.

Anyone ride on this there and have any impressions?

The middle section is going to be a rapid transit bus system. Like light rail, but with buses, so it's cheaper. Right now, it's just a bunch of torn up dirt and concrete, slated for completion in 2007 I think. This is the first I've heard of the bike part. Franklin Blvd. is currently the main "4 lane road with left turn lanes and median in the middle" lots of hotels, shops, restaurant, and the U of O lie along it. 35mph, and I would not bike on it. Fortunately, it doesn't really go anywhere important, just Springfield, and the only place I go along Franklin is Track Town Pizza, where i ride on the sidewalk for 100m.

It's actually for Richmond, BC (a suburb of Vancouver and home of the Vancouver International Airport - where I work) and is part of the new rapid transit line to be ready for the Olymipics in 2010.

The local paper has a feature on the development that says, "Vehicles often encroach into on-street bike lanes when passing, turning, loading and illegally parking. A raised bikeway would eliminate those conflicts. The physical separation from vehicles provided by a raised bikeway improves the safety of cyclists which, in turn, will encourage greater use of the faciities, particularily by novice cyclists and children"

I don't know. I doubt if it will increase cycling in the area. Time will tell, of course, but I have my doubts.
