Advocacy & Safety - A Dilemma we hadn't considered before perhaps

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Here In Toronto, one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, and often cited as the most ethnically diverse city in the world, the World Cup is a big deal with every neighbourhood jam-packed with supporters of virtually every team represented in the tournament. Following each win, the fans celebrate in the streets by driving their cars, screaming, yelling, waving flags, blowing whistles and honking horns.

So here's the dilemma: how am I supposed to honk my horn when the team I am rooting for wins? With an AirZounds, I'll be out of air in fifteen minutes and no battery-powered horn could be loud enough.

Yes, these are the weighty issues I ponder every day.

:D :D

With lungs healthy from all your cycling, just let out whoops of joy!

Alas, while I am an avid cyclist and a vocal advocate for cycling, I am, sadly, still a smoker, thus I don't ride fast nor yell loud.

Traditionally, once the horns cease functioning the custom is to start rioting and looting.

Snag a cheap automotive air horn and run it off a 12V battery on your rear rack.

How about one of those old fashioned metal bicycle horns with the rubber bulbs? They can be somewhat loud.

you shatter my image of you... I used to smoke, for many years... When I quit, I just stopped... sometimes I still want to smoke... but I don't... it's not that hard... you can do it ;)

What is this World Cup thingy?
Is it some sort of lawn bowling?

Turn over a few cars and set them on fire.

Easy for you, maybe, but the hardest thing I ever did.
(Also one of the best things I ever did!)

All very good ideas. I may use one or two of them.

As for the smoking: I know I should quit. There's not a good thing about it except the sense of calm and relaxation it gives me. I've tried to quit before and met with failure in spite of sincere efforts. Maybe there's a part of me....the part that rides bikes (and not your regular road-bike either, but bents, cruisers, custom stretch cruisers and choppers) that is a rebel and smoking is definitely a rebellious act nowadays, especially here in Toronto, with the most repressive antismoking laws in North America.

Take the lane and slow enough to block traffic -- someone else will do the honking for you. Lot easier than carrying around a 30 lb battery :)

With an AirZounds, I'll be out of air in fifteen minutes and no battery-powered horn could be loud enough. I was getting frustrated lately with all sorts of cycling trouble and our inferiority to cars. This thread was really the last straw. I realize now that cycling is not a viable option in the city. Watch for me in the SUV. :D

Actually, just yesterday I saw a guy on a bike with an English flag attached to the rack, so I waved and yelled at the top of my lungs: "Go England!!!" Now, the funny thing is I don't give a rat's tail if England flops or wins the bloody thing. It was just fun to wave at a cyclist and cheer.

Actually smoking does not calm or relax you. The time between smoking drives you nuts then you smoke, you return to the euphoric state and start over.

I quit smoking 4 years ago, had a very rough time of it. Quit several times, once for 2 years and started back again. The hardest thing I've done, but well worth it.

Keep quitting, one of these times you'll not start again.

EDIT:
Sorry about the off topic post.

Consider what you can do with one of those mini airhorns (compressed air in a canister with a horn on top) folks take to sporting events and a mess of zipties.

Ummmm...

Scream "whoo hooo"?

Are you saying all those people are honking horns and not saying a word?

You'll be ok. Use the voice the good Lord gave ya.
