One of the advantages to being a transportational cyclist in the U.S. is that one already knows how their obituary is going to read. *sigh*

Local news is reporting that the cyclist bike and shoes remained at the point of impact, and he was literaly sucked out of his shoes and under the rear wheels of the cement truck.

This is a very congested part of Kansas City, alot of construction vehicles in route to build our new downtown sports arena. Some local bikers are making comments to the fact that the bicyclist should have been better prepared to avoid the cement truck making his turn.

We just may never know exactly what took place at that intersection.

That's very sad...

I've rarely seen a cement truck driver in this area that wasn't talking on the phone and speeding. I nearly got into a fistfight with one cement truck driver that was doing about 60mph through my daughter's school zone marked with 25mph signs and flashing lights. And yes, he was yakking about something really important on his cellphone.

And in our state, the ever powerful trucking lobby has made it possible for dump trucks and cement trucks to no longer require any indentification on the trucks, including license plates. It seems the trucking industry was tired of dealing with bad driving and broken windshield claims.

We had a cement kill a cyclist a few years back in Fort Collins, CO. It was big news here, because the cyclist was also a bicycle safety instructor.

At least the article said he hit the cyclist. I hate it when they say the cyclist lost control and fell under the wheels. Yeah, like I believe that!

My personal experience with cement truck drivers is they drive way too fast for what they're driving and they have a reckless disregard for anybody else on the road.

I live in Kansas City, near downtown and not far from the location of the incident. At the moment, Kansas City downtown is going through a major redevelopment with many differnet projects under constucion. So, downtown always was a pain in the butt to drive your car, because of so many one way streets, lack of on street parking, and exspensive paid off street parking. Now, it is even worse for motorist. So, one would think, that it would be a good idea to ride your bicycle instead. It is still better to ride your bike down town, for all of the reasons listed above. However, with all the trucks and heavy equipment traffic, we now see that it is dangerous for bicyclist as well.

As a trucker/cyclist, I deal with these types everyday of the week.
I'll see them as they go flying past me on the 15.
Then I'll chew their ***** out at the Pilot before I go for ridebreak.
They'll give me the usual "supertrucker" excuse.
But, most of the time, these are just some dolts who got their company-sponsored training done two months ago. Now they think they reign supreme over everyone on the road.
But, try that with a CHP weigh station officer, and they'll be crying like the toddler they truly are.

I think its intresting how its still pending for investigation to see "who if anybodies fault" for the acident, so basicly it may end up like that other guy that "didnt see him" so its not his fault.

Still to lose a shoe, that takes some impact wich means somthing odd had to have happened.

What happend to professionalism? Did it die with the golden age of trucking?

I was a company trained driver and my entire class conducted themselves as professionals.

I was instructed that any "accident" involving in excess of $1000 damages and certainly bodily harm resulted in the driver going before the board who would then scrutinize the events to determine if there was anyway that the driver could have avoided the accident altogether not just "who was a fault."

I sometimes could see why a veteran driver, who thinks that he has seen everything on the road, might take unnecessary risks gambling on their skills, but I would think that newly trained drivers would be exceptionally cautious--I was.

From the KC Star: (http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/14809998.htm)

The cement truck was making a right turn at 12th Street and Grand Boulevard as Triggs entered the intersection from the sidewalk, police said. The truck dragged him for a block underneath its rear tires.

So was he sidewalk riding?
Because hitting a sidewalk rider is one of my greatest fears. It is one of those places where "I couldn't see he might be legit excuse." There's no reason to be looking for a 15mph vehicle where they're not allowed.
