General Cycling Discussion - The answer to any and all questions....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As a new bike rider (steady for about two years) I've learned a lot about equipment and riding. Forums like this are a great help as well as picking the brains of the roadies and others I come into contact with on a daily basis. Does anyone know of a site or sites on the web that give in depth descriptions of cycling equipment, riding techniques, tips for beginners, etc? Basically, I'm looking for information that can bring me up to speed knowledge wise. Sort of a cycling A-Z type of site/sites. Any help or direction would be much appreciated! I would also like to find a diagram of bike with arrows pointing out the different parts/components with a description of their functions (and hopefully a pronunciation quide!) so that I can become familiar with as much as possible.

Just remember to never use the word 'sprocket', and everything else will fall into place.

When I first started cycling seriously, I went to this amazing place .... it was filled with books - paper with writing on it ..... they called it "The Library".

In "The Library" I discovered a section completely devoted to books on cycling!! OK, so there were only about half a dozen books, but I read them all cover to cover.

You might check to see if your town has one of these "Libraries", and if it has books on bicycles and cycling for you to read. The books give you a good foundation from which you can build your knowledge.

The next step, after you've done some basic reading, might be to visit sites like these:

Sheldon Brown (linked above by Machka) has a whole beginners section full of basic articles and a bicycle glossary.
