Downtown Boston retail space is very expensive, so there are very few shops there. Back Bay Cycles on Newbury St near the Prudential Ctr is the closest I can think of right now. Most of the big shops are in the inner suburbs (Somerville, Cambridge, Newton, etc.) Are you looking for anything in particular? Brands?
I'd be glad to look through the yellow pages to find places that have what you are looking for.

Jean,
How do you like Back Bay Bikes? Papa Wheelies (the second in that "chain" of shops) just opened in my area. Its nice - salesmen are helpful and the selection of accessories and clothing blows away anything within 45 minutes of me(I don't live near many large shops). If its anything like Papa Wheelies, I would suggest Back Bay Bicycles as an option for you to visit, Orguasch.

Not exactly Downtown Boston
but Harris Cyclery where you too can
meet Captain Bike, aka Sheldon Brown.
Total distance is about 9 miles.
Get directions from Mapquest.
address from Haris Cyclery contact info (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/contact.html)

Thanks, I will be going there for some medical procedure for my son but since I will be in Boston, i might as well visit some local LBS, who knows, I might be able to pick up some bike stuff that might be very cheap,, don"t worry my son will be in the hand of Very good "American Doctors"

Hope all goes well with the "procedure," and nobody has a heart attack when the bills come.

Definitely a required side trip for any bicyclist visiting greater Boston!

Ace Wheelworks.
It's in Somerville.. outside of Davis square. It is only
about 8 miles from downtown (as most places are in boston)
Good shop though. The people that work there are awesome.
I'm not really too fond of Back bay bikes myself.. just my humble opinion though..more of a tourist shop i thought.
Good luck with your son..
Ohh also 'bicycle classics' but i don;t know where they're
located or if they're still around :)

i've used backbaybicycles, atabike (porter sq cambridge) and farinas (watertown). Backbay didn't have what i wanted at the time but were helpful and told me where else i could get it. Atabike sponsor boston road bike club, but one of the guys can be really snobby, the other one was really helpful but isn't there as much. They also seemed to do only road and road only. Farinas is where i bought my bike from and the family atmosphere is nice and they are helpful.
They all seem to be about the same in size, i'm gonna check out another one tomorrow to see about some mudguards and panniers for my commuter
Check out Community Bicycle Supply. They are at 496 Tremont Street (much cheaper then Back Bay Bicycles). Beacon Street Bicycles (842 Beacon Street) is not a bad little shop either. The other posters are right that the really good shops are in the suburbs. I hope the above 2 shops are still around. I have not lived in Boston for about 5 years.
