After a fairly decent year in '01 (3300 miles, many charity rides and club tours), 2002 turned out to be a real loser (cycling-wise). Lost my ambition and found every excuse not to train. So here I am in '03, horribly out of shape, but determined to make '03 my best year yet. My goals: 3500 road miles, bring my weight down from my current 217 to 185 by Aug 1st (I'm 6'1", and 53 yrs). Goodbye high cholesterol and marginal high blood pressure. The only saving grace of '02 is that I met my true love, and will be married on Feb 14th...less than 1 month!

The only thing that I can suggest that is you take breaks from cycling whenever you feel yourself starting to lose motivation. No speedo, no heart monitor if you do decide to do a small ride. This could prevent pushing you to the point where you totally lose motivation. I did go through a couple small spells like that. Perhaps you new found love can provide motivation also?

I may well be shot for heresy here but I reckon finding your true love is a far more important achievement than clocking up lots of miles on your bike.

Have a fantastic wedding and a wonderful new life together. Oh yes - and get back on your bike when you're ready.

congrats to you and the new mommasmoke!!

i aspired to hit 3500 miles and came close with exactly 3400. i live in the midwest, so my milage is automatically under pressure from weather conditions. add in all of lifes suprises and curiosities and its a miracle i am blessed enough to find the time to burn the calories i need to stay svelte (lol)

-think quality, not quantity.
-think in terms of times on the bike, not how many miles done once on the bike
-365 days in year. 10 miles a day is 3650 miles. is this realistic for you
-you know your body and more importantly your psyche better than anyone else. listen to it
-3500 is just a number
-1st year marriage not the time to increase miles?!
(come to think of it neither is 10 years of marriage and now 3 kids) HOLY CRAP!!! I'M IN TROUBLE!!

I blew it in 2002 too  After two summers in a row with 3000+ miles this past summer and up until now I have been off of the bike. Right now, I've been doing some mountain biking lately, the snow doesnt help, and once it warms up I plan on getting back on my trusty Bianchi. Good luck with the wedding and enjoy the rest of your life with the lucky lady. :D
