We had a great time at Sugar Mountain... House mates took medals home! The truely BEST one was Nick Waite's 1st podium spot at NORBA - 5th in the Men's Pro XC. Dr. Steve got a 3rd in Expert 40-45 XC, Todd took 4th in Expert 30-35 XC, and my boy took a 2nd in Jr 14 XC. He tried to move a tree, unsuccessfully. Got a big knot on his head, a big dent in his BRAND NEW Atmos - gosh, is he steamed about that!! I say better to dent the helmet & save your head!

Well, evidently his problem was that his hydraulic rear brake went out.. just as he hit the downhill. He said he just laid there for awhile, until he saw a bike go by, hence, second. It takes more than a tree to knock that kid out of the race! Fortunate for us, we were hanging with Dr. Steve!

Girlscout did the SuperD right after the downhill. He said it had some pretty tech sections on it. I sure wouldn't want to be on it without both brakes!

Sounds like everyone did great apclassic. Wish I could have been there. Unfortunately work has to come first sometimes. :(

I'm still not sure if I would have done NORBA or 24 hours though.

Sounds like a great time all around! Congrats to everyone! Hey, I've tried moving those trees before; doggone full-face helmets don't do much more than dent the bark a bit deeper :D. Glad your boy's OK - -helmet did it's job for sure.

What did you think about the cost to race? Jake paid his money to race(DH + SuperD), then a lift ticket. He only two practice runs in on the DH course and none for SuperD he raced it blind(the lifts are slow). Thats why he crashed a bunch, not knowing the course. If I'd had let him practice on fri. it was more $$ for another lift ticket. Give me a break!

Nationals are always that way. Mountain gets their pound of flesh in lift tickets for every single day (!!). Plus, as you were saying, mtnbiker66, big entry fees - -double if you opt for the Super-D.

I had to race Schweizter's (Idaho) super-d blind after about a 10-minute rest following my DH run two years ago. Talk about a killer. Between volunteering and DH practice, I forgot and missed that morning's practice. Had some mach-speed whitle-knucklers that time but fortunately never crashed and got on the podium anyway.

If you can volunteer for a National (course marshall some of the XC stuff and/or some of the earlier DH practices) it will often get you a wristband for the lift that's good for all weekend; then you have no worries (depending on the protmoter, volunteering may get an entry or two comped too).

Good tips, I'll check on that for next year. Thanks.

Aside from the cost - which for Jr's is only $30 - there's the racers prize factor - if you're racing Pro, the money's good in the top 5 spots, but otherwise? Snowshoe gave out neat "Champion" sweatshirts, Mt. Snow gives beer glasses... Sugar Mountain? rather poor medals. But, I've already ranted on that on another thread.....

Skip Vermont & come to WV's Appalachian Classic for a cheap, great time next weekend!!

It's really easy to pinch your kid's head off when the pic is that small, isn't it?
