KSTP AM 1500 on the Willie and Jay show http://www.am1500.com/index.htm. in Minneapolis/ St. Paul MN Business office phone is 651 647 1500. They were bashing cyclists. I can't find a download to play/link to. Did anyone else hear this? It was the common crap being said, bike pants are gay. Helmets are gay. When cyclists are on the road you should reach out and slap them. etc.

Any help would be nice.

so did this really happen???

Yes it did. I don't listen to this station much. I have it programed into the radio in the Kitchen so I can catch a sports score now and then. This morning while making breakfast I hit the button and bang... bike bashing.

The station Mgr called me back. He didn't see anything wrong about saying saying you shouldn't wear helmets and that helmets are gay, that won't keep kids from wearing them. Of course they don't have the show archived to listen to.

The best approach to these types of things is to note who is advertising during these shows, then complain to the advertising companies, indicating that you and your cycling brethren will publicly boycott their products until this crap stops. These idiots thrive on being irreverent (it covers up for their irrelevence), and the station management pays them to deliver listeners so they can charge advertisers high prices. Threaten their money train and you've got their attention.

If you saw thier arbitron ratings through spring 2006 you wouldn't worry, only you and 3 other people were listening anyway. This station is losing .7-.8 in share every rating period. They are falling back on the old standby and stirring up the mouth breathers that listen to this kind of sheot. They hope to get enough cyclists pissed so it makes headlines and people listen to see what stupid crap they say next so they get a ratings boost.

Lots of 1-800 numbers for out-of-towners too.

Subway Sandwiches tries to promote a healthy image, they advertise with KSTP 1500.

Don't call angry, just call them to let them know, in order to be fair and friendly, that you cannot in good conscience support their business knowing they advertise with a station that;

1. Promotes violence against strangers (slapping cyclists from moving vehicles, asualt that can cause injury & death) You have a daughter that cycles, you would hate to think she would be struck & killed because a weak-willed person listened to a station that suggested it was a good idea. Is that really what your business intends to support, this radio station?

2. Promotes an atmosphere of intolerance based on sexual preferences/practices. (Helmets are gay = Don't wear helmets, Helmets are bad = Homosexuals are bad, do not tolerate homosexuals)

Remember it doesn't matter if they advertise on that particular show, because the show is sanctioned by the station.

Good point, call the advertisers, not the newspapers. Try to make it so that the only ones the station hears from are advertisers.

If they are down, and they think this justifies promoting violence, this is the time to kick them.

Thanks for the ideas!

We should kick them because violence is... bad. (Right?) ;-)

Depends on what you use to kick them, for instance I kick ass at chess :)

I'm calling Cabela's. I have clothes from there I wear on my bike, not to mention lots of other stuff I've bought from them.

By any chance, is this a Sports Radio station?

If so, I'd love to call them this morning and ask how "gay" Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers is going to look with his facial fractures this morning.

yup a sports station

I don't listen to them very often it was a long shot I heard them yesterday. I did turn them on at about 8 am for a bit and they were calling Ben dumb for not wearing a helmet.

I don't like the people on the show and when you see their market share it seems most people here don't like them either.

I did talk with a group that has a event being sponsored in part by the station. The group was very concerned about the statements and said they would call the station owner. The group said they didn’t listen to the station because they find other stations more interesting. The group also said the rating of the station were really low and wondered how much the sponsorship was helping them, add this and it could be time to look for other stations to help. The group acknowledged that it could have been a shock statement to try for ratings and making this a big news thing would help the station more than help bikers. They also recommended calling the advertisers. Let the money talk!
