With regards to health and fitness and being fit to ride only and all transportation, messengering, and hanging out aside,
Do you ride to get in shape or get in shape to ride?
I know it can be a little bit of both at times, but no riding on the fence with "all of the above". Only 2 options.

i race as an excuse to train as an excuse to ride my bike more.
..but I sold my Jetta for $1 and a 12 pack of NewCastle as an excuse to bike more...
going deeper, I ride to get/stay in shape. but when I'm at the gym I focus on my legs to get to ride better... so, um, both.

I just ride, and I'm in pretty good shape because of it.

how about "I ride to get places and have fun". I answered "ride to get in shape" but thats a little off seeing as how when I'm riding it usually is taking me to or from work or some place where I am severely ruining the "in shape" part with unhealthy amounts of cigarettes and alcohol.

This phrase is an adaptation of one that my HS tennis coach used to motivate me and explain what it took to be a good athlete.

Back in the day I started riding for fun. Then got into shape because of it. But that was when I was single. I voted "I ride to get in shape" but with infrequency of my riding is starting to show. Nowadays, I seem to have a keg rather than a 6-pack. I'm hoping to ride more early morning and/or lunchtime rides at work. I have to get in shape for the soccer league I joined for the summer. Otherwise I'll be the out of shape 34 year old guy who has to play keeper since he can't run worth poop. And that ain't no fun!

Riding is the only exercise I get, so both. I ride for transportation, for fun, and to challenge myself. The focus depends on the ride.

I ride to have fun, get to and from work, because it makes my @ss look good in a g-string, keep one step ahead of all the "stuff" I dump into my system, and to keep my lungs "strong like bull" so I don't die surfing @ Ocean Beach.
Other than that I just do it for the cookies.
sometimes the only reason i go to school is because it's an excuse to ride my bike. that said, i am a lazy **** and love riding my bike more than anything else, and have become significantly more fit in the past year because of it.

Bike Messenger.
There isn't an option for "I ride because I'm a bike addicted, adrenalin junkie who makes a living on two wheels."

None of the above. I am in good enough shape for the riding I do.
