Step 1) Check the out library to see what bike repair manuals they can get for you.

Step 2) Buy a cheapie bike off of craigslist or a yardsale to fix up...mess up your project bike while you tinker/learn, not your main ride.

Step 3) ????

There really isnt any reason to spend a dime on learning how to work on your bike.
