Bicycle Mechanics - Cantilever to Road Caliper

Is it possible to convert cantilever brakes on a Giant aluminum frame bike to road calipers? (I hate the stopping power with cantilever brakes.) The front fork already has a hole that would seemingly accommodate a road caliper. Can one simply drill a hole in the rear frame for insertion of a rear road caliper?

I am slightly confused... are you looking for more or less stopping power? Cantis will typically have more stopping power than caliper brakes....

Drilling holes in frames is never a sure bet. I personally wouldn't do it.

Cantilever brakes don't have any less stopping power than calipers. In fact, they typically have more, though at the cost of greater weight and poorer modulation. I wouldn't drill holes in your bike in order to install expensive, less effective brakes. Learn how to set up your cantis properly and they'll work just fine for you.

Bikes that use cantis usually have more tyre clearance than those using calipers. Some of the longer drop calipers may fit but you have to measure the drop from the bolt to the rims.
Brake bolt holes need to be drilled accurately to be well aligned. Personally I dont think it is worthwhile. I use both types of brake and prefer calipers for their better modulation and sharper bite but cantis can be made to work better. i think Sheldon Brown has something on adjusting the stradle wire cable for optimum mechanical advantage.

I ordered two sets of Kool-Stop (Salmon) Brake Pads. I also made some finer adjustments to the cable tension and the cantilevers themselves. Braking power is significantly better, (but I still like Road Calipers more). :)
