does anyone of you know a rider, who had the most participations in the Tour before actually winning it the first time?

I have detected one, would like to see your feedback.

i assume you're thinking of joep zoetemelk, or maybr riis

Of the ones I can find:

Joop Zoetmelk 10th try
Lucian van Impe 8th try
Riis 7th try
Jan Jansen 6th try
Bahamontes 5th try

I'm sure there are some more in the 5-7 range.

There is not anyone else who is later than their 12th try as I checked everyone with 13 or more participations.
