So today is my first day. Iam way excited should be a good summer of no car, no gas, no worring about tickets. All of you people have inspired me. Ill try to do this as long as I can. The only time I will drive is if I really need it. Iam at least off to a good start.

:) I ended up car free because I had an old Plymouth Acclaim about this time last year... Yeah, it was almost dead and I couldn't find a way to afford a new car (I owned the acclaim outright, no car payments!) without basically spending all my money on the car. I could have afforded the car, but then I would have had no spending cash. Thus I bought a bike and several months later, after letting my car sit in the parking garage (I never drove it after getting my bike other than to make sure it still ran) I had it scrapped, in time to not have to pay my next insurance bill! No car whatsoever since! I love it.

I've been carfree (Truck free?) for about a month now... That's when my transmission went out! I have a new transmission, and the skill to install it myself.... I just don't have the motivation!

I'm having a blast riding the bike... Just got back from the store with a full pack of necessities, as well as a 22 pound bag of dogfood and a 12 pack of toilet paper! Yeah, I got some funny looks with the dog food and toilet paper strapped on top of my rack! *laughs* Would have been a lot easier with grocery panniers, but I haven't gotten them yet.

While I can't say I'm car-free (I haven't found a way to get two acoustic guitars to a gig 50 miles away using only my bike... yet), about this time last year I was in the same sitch when my 92 nissan stanza died and I didnt' have the $$ to fix it. Instead, I took my old trek 820 to the bike shop, had it tuned up for $20, and that was my primary mode of transportation for quite awhile.
The big upshot of that is, after the first day of riding around (after not having a functional bike for a year or so) I decided that if I was gonna be riding all summer, I was a schmuck if I kept smoking ciggys, so I quit cold turkey then and there, and haven't gone back since. This was one of the most positive changes in my life and every day I feel better because of it.

WTG Maxi. Glad to hear you quit the nicotine. Keep riding, and those lungs will clear up in no time!
