I can get an 01 Schwinn Mesa for around $150. My friend bought it for $400, but i'm not sure which mesa it is. Would this be a good bike to turn into an urban assault bike? Or a trials bike? Is this even a good deal? Thanx

You could do it, but go ahead and start saving money for a new frame. That one won't last long!

I've got a '01 Mesa GSX that I got for about $500. It has Deore components and a Manitou Magnum fork. They made two other Mesas one was a GS and I don't know what the other one was, but they came with Alivo or acera components and a cheaper fork however I think the frame is the same and I have had no problems with the frame at all. I am a 200 lbs rider and the only thing I have had problems with is the fork is too light for me. You may want to spend some money upgrading the components, but I think it is an overall good bike.
Ummmmm NO It would be a good commuter bike or a XC light trail bike but Urban or Trials? not a chance.
