Bicycle Mechanics - New derailer- pulleys are making noise

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Installed a new rear derialer on my bike and have noise coming from the pulleys when I ride. They are rattling and such as I ride. Almost seems like the chain does not fit the pulleys exactly.
Is this due to a new pully set with an old chain or have I messed up somewhere in running the chain through them? Using Shimano Altus derailers which is what the old one was as well.
Thanks.
It may be a "new" derailleur but if it has been sitting around for a couple years the pulley bushings could have bad lube. I recently bought a new old stock Shimano Deore LX rear derailleur where the pulleys squealed even though the unit was new. Its like a 10 minute job to remove the pulleys, disassemble, clean, grease and reassemble in the reverse order.

You don't have the chain running over the tab in the der. cage, right? I've done it before
No, it is not the tab. Noise seems to be coming from the rear pulley. Looks like the chain does not quite hit the teeth of the gear dead on and causes a small slip as it goes around.

Do you have the pulley from your old der? You might try that one. You might also try swapping pulleys just to see if anything changes. Are the two pulleys different in some way?
Took a long look at the derailer today and found that the cage is bent just a little. It is enough so that when I am riding, the chain rubs against the cage as it goes around the gear.
A little gentle persuasion with some pliers and the sound is nearly gone. Gonna work on it a bit more and the problem should be fixed.
