okay, I want to upgrade my rear derailleur and shifting from Suntour Alpha 3000. Is Sora enough of a jump to make me happy or should I look at 105?

I have never used Sora, but I would go for 105...those things are built like tanks. I have one that's seen mountain bike levels of abuse, yet still shifts perfectly every time.

How much componentry are you looking to replace?

I am assuming that the a3000 is 7 speed. To go to anything else, you are probably talking 8 or 9 speed, unless you want to go the ebay and craigslist route to scout out old 7 speed stuff. If you go for old 7, you will at least need a new freewheel, since Suntour and Shimano are spaced differently. If you go for 8 or 9, you will need a new rear wheel and cassette. Either way, you will need the brifters and both derailleurs. Chainrings may work, but if they are beat up anyway, you will need them too, and a new chain no matter what. Is the frame worth the upgrades?

I really like this bike and all. I was planning on ditching the double anyway and go with a single up front.

It would have to be an amazing frame for me to spend the money on an upgrade like that. Just my opinion.
