Hi,
I was at Walmart today and found Glutamine powder. It got me to thinking....
I could make a high tech sports drink for pennies. I could start with a base of juice
or something, add a dash of salt, a pinch of glutamine, and have something close to
what you get in those really expensive sports drinks.

What can I do to improve it?

Got another question... if I was making a drink from scratch, is there an ideal combination of sugars, or some sugars to avoid? Accelerade has trehalose, is that worth trying?

got a source for powdered Magnesium carbonate?

Glutamine has little, to no value while you're riding. Maltodextrin and a touch of frutose would be more useful. Gatorade powder is available for a cost of about $1.30 per gallon.

Most of the things inside the bottle are cheap. They are expensive because
advertising is expensive, lawyers are expensive, and the lawyers made insurance even more expensive.

I just want to find out what's worth using in my home brew sports drink, and where I can get those ingredients cheap.

Maltodextrin is available at shops that sell home brewing supplies, like for beer. Sometimes you can find maltodextrin in health food stores and grocery stores like Winco that sell some items in bulk (bins).

You'll want to replace carbs and electrolytes that are lost due to excercise. Add potassium and B-6 to these formula's and you're good to go (I guess). The absorbtion rate should be followed probably. Listed at 7% on one of the articles. Avoiding simple sugars will help your body convert, so use Maltodextrin instead.

The table at the end of the article will help.

Use maltodextrin instead of table sugar:

Use sucralose or xylitol for sweetener.

Let us know how it works out. I spend a lot on supplements, but don't have the time to dicker around with experimenting. So that's why I buy 'em.

Greed, but they'll tell you research.
