thinking about doing it in the summer. going witha mate who likes his luxuries, so looking for a cheap hotel/B&B route

I think you will find the route information and other stuff, including accomodation, in Lonely Planet Cycling Britain book.
I browsed thru the book sometime ago and remember seeing that route.

I've seen a few sources for maps and information:

http://cycle-n-sleep.co.uk/nonreliefukmap.htm

The latter has maps, topography and suggestions on points of interest and B&Bs (if that is how you are travelling).
