I'm thinking of moving my one geared bike up to 8spd since the original rear wheel is iffy and I don't have any 6 or 7spd cassettes. Will a 6/7 spd chain work on 8spd or will it bind up? Thanks,

Yes it will work.

I have heard otherwise. I'm sure you know more than I do, but I have always heard that you can go down but not up, and I have always bought chains designed to work with 6/7s or 8/9s. Are there any disadvantages when you go up? I'm intrigued.

Cog spacing (on Shimano cassettes) is the same for 6/7/8. 9 spd is narrower and has to use a different chain.
