Mountain Biking - Road Helmets for MTB - shud be OK - right ?

I am buying a new helmet and I prefer the look of the helmets specified as road, as compared with MTB specified helmets which mainly seem to have those visors on the front. I also intend to use it for road riding also...

Am I right in thinking it doesn't really matter, if it's a good helmet for road should also be good for MTB ? right ?

At the end of the day if you land on yr head whether road or mud the helmet should do the same job.
In fact I would assume if anything road helmets should be stronger as the road is harder than mud and yr likely going faster...

I think they go through the exact same testing procedures for safety, so you should be fine.

edit: in fact, i see tons of guys at my mtb races wearing Grio Atmos' and Catlike Kompacts.

+1 for the Catlike Kompact. Super light, amazing ventilation and very stable. It's also got a great euro-trash colour scheme! :D

One kid at my race a few weeks ago was wearing a white Kompact with the WC stripes down the middle.. ahhhhhh, looked so nice!

Yup, you will be fine with a road helmet. I use the Atmos from time to time on my mountain bike with no problems. Personally I can't stand riding with a visor.

If you look closely, a lot of mountain helmets ARE road helmets with a visor attached. Construction is exactly the same for both.

If you're an XC racing type it's all good.

Try to stay out of the dirtjump park and off the DH course with this look though. :)

After a nasty crash, I discovered that the visor double as an eye protector. If you come down hard on top of your head and plow, the visor will pop down over your peepers. This is a good thing even if you're wearing eyewear.

Unfortunately visor's lead to me having a stiff neck from riding. Not worth it to me. :o

The visor on my Bell Influx II helmet ($60, REI) is made to snap off & on. I liked the vents best on this helmet & since I ride both mtn & road, it made the best choice. Like the price too.

Most mtb helmets are designed this way. My havocs and e2's are designed the same way.

my giro xen visor has 15 degrees of movement, so if you dont want to use it, you just push it up, and you cant even tell its there... but i usually just take it off, and the helmet looks way better without it.

I use a Louis gearneau Tbone which is a road helmet for mountain bike riding. got it at Nashbar for $40

I tried my helmet without the visor...looks like a bubble without it.

OK I know it maybe fredwina like... but I have 3 helmets, all the same (Giro Havoc) just different colors I use for both road and MTB alike. I like the fit, the look and the visor. Can't stand having the sun in my eyes so I must have a visor. I really don't think it matters just as long as you wear one.
