Folding Bikes - Best of Craigslist/Ebay/Garage Sales

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, I said it, so I'll try getting it rolling. The idea for this is to have a thread where people to point out good deals that they've seen.
*THIS THREAD IS NOT TO SELL YOUR OWN THINGS*
Mods, if you think this isn't acceptable, or if it gets out of hand, just lock it. I'm not trying to be norty.
Suggested guidelines.
-Don't cut your nose off despite your face. If you see a deal and have the cash to spend, grab it. If not, however, here's the place to give fellow Folding Forum members a heads-up.
-Post a link, description. If it's a garage sale or a Craigslist ad, note the locality.
-This is probably a good place too for posting amusing ads, like people who ask wayy to much for something or really bizarre bikes.

I'll start it off:
Bike Friday mid-90's Metro - $430-$490
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/171083382.html
This keeps getting posted in the NYC/Philly Craiglists. The guy's been offering it for at least two months, and the price has dropped from $675 to under $500. Apparently the seatpost may be stuck. He's got it up on ebay too now, with a starting bid of $430.
Geo8rge, since you said that you sniff out a lot of CL finds, maybe you've already inspected this one and passed it over?

Checked out the Ebay ad. I wonder if he knows the BF trick for levering a tight stem off using a headset wrench.
$430 might sound like a good price for a BF, but this is one that was probably $600 new, 10 years or so ago. Add in one acknowledged issue, and undetermined cost for parts to fix it up, and I probably wouldn't go higher than $250. He'll probably get the $430, though.

bookishboy, I have seen Bike Fridays before so I passed on it, although it might be an excuse to go to Trader Joe's nearby. The Strida I got satisfied my bargain hunting for a while, I have to decide if I want a carry bag. Some minor technical issues need being taken care of.

And people are still buying them for outrageous prices on ebay like they were Smithsonian pieces--I saw one go for over 200, and that was the flimsy kind with the dainty little collapsable triangle. At least overpaying for a R20 you end up with a solid bike.

Hey all you Raleigh Twenty enthusiasts, an antiques dealer in "West Chatham, USA" (I suspect it's Mass.) has a nice green Twenty up on eBay. Is $175 a good or bad deal for one of those?

Popular consensus in here *seems* to say that more than $100 for a Raleigh Twenty is too much. But if you really want one and there aren't any bargains to be had at the moment, AND if it's in superb condition, then who are we to say that it isn't worth it.... for you?
Keep in mind what you want to do with your Twenty, once you get one, and consider the other costs/upgrades that you'll be throwing into it.

Dahon Helios SL (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=280008397983)on ebay looks like a 2004 to me but the description doesn't mention year. I recall there was some interest in the helios sl because it's lighter than anything currnetly on the market...
Someone on Boston Craig's List was selling an "Ace" mountain bike folding bike with 20" wheels for $140 He sold it within an hour, and the tires were knobby ones. Has anyone heard of "Ace" before?

We have a Silk Porta Cycle manufactured by Katakura- Tokyo, Japan, and we are planning on selling it shortly. I am interested to know how much this bike is worth? It is also known as a 1950s Japanese WWII Paratroopers Bicycle. The bicycle is in good condition from the 1960s with all original parts, 3sp, some minor scratches on the paint. I tried to attach a photo to this posting, but the forum only allows files less than 100Kb and the photo my digital camera took was about 150Kb and I don't have software at this location handy to shrink it down. But then again, if you are familiar with the brand, you know what it looks like - a folding bicycle with very high handlebars.
Thanks to anyone who can provide info!

Hey Randy,
This thread is mostly folks posting about good deals that they've found on Craigslist/Ebay/etc, and are giving a heads-up to others who might want to grab them. You might have better luck starting a new thread and asking for info about your bike.

My understanding was that that little red star next to my name would let me do it. Please let me know if this is a mistake, I can always delete it if it is a big deal.

Swift folder for $400 on Philly Craigslist:

I was tempted to snatch this one up myself, but I already snagged my steel-framed one. If someone here grabs it, cheers.
This seems to be an aluminum Xootr model, and I get the impression that it's being sold by the same guy who was selling homemade aluminum folding bikes on CL, and then polluting his ads with every kind of keyword he could in order to raise the hit-count. ("Brompton, Dahon, Swift, Moulton, etc")
The item thor listed is now with a reduced reserve price AND accepting paypal. :)

Not to be a grump, but I'm pretty sure that the moderators enforce a rule of "Sell your things in the Classifieds forum, not in the regular ones."
I don't want to have this thread get shut down because the users in here are hawking their own wares.... or helping each other to do so with a scratch-each-others' back scenario.
