What am I doing wrong? Same size obviously as my old tires, but I just can't get those last 12 inches inside the rim.

Some tyre brands can be real bastards to get on certain brand rims. Check list: Fit the entire bead of one side onto the rim before attempting the other. Fit the tube valve first. Start fitting the next side of the tyre around the valve first. Push the valve into the rim to help seat the bead. Once you're at the last 12 inches lay the wheel on the floor and gently rest the ball of one foot on the edge closest to you and manipulate the remaining bead of the tyre pushing froward with your thumbs made of steel. Holding the wheel down should give you some extra leverage. Failing that use some michelin plastic tyre levers to carefully lever the bead on ..... make sure you tuck the tube up into the tyre to keep it from being pinched by the lever. Good luck!

With a tough fit(or not so), I've never had much luck using my thumbs. with some tires you'll break your thumbs before you get it on. I use my palms and bully the remaining bead. Try to avoid using levers to get the tire on.

Teammate of mine throws his tires in the dryer for a few minutes before installing.

Some rim/tire combinations are really awful to put together. In the past I always refused to use a tire lever, muscling the tire in place. But one particular gatorskin was so stubborn it took the skin right off my thumbs! Definitely use a lever if you have to, but as stated above, be careful not to pinch the tube.
