Commuting - Bike Magazines?

any cool Bike magazines out there? I've seen "Bicycling" but I'm not that into it... it's OK.... I'm not into Mountain Biking, (although my commuter IS a mountain bike with slicks on it) and I don't race or anything. is there a magazine for regular ol' bike commuters...riders... enthusiasts...? if not there should be!

You know, I get more entertainment out of this forum than I do out of any magazine!

...and the floor doesn't get littered with subscription cards...

I know as commuters we cry for a magazine, but they just don't stay in print.

There are a few great small publications out there. Nothing specifically for commuters, but several for non-racing cyclists...the Riv Reader, Vintage Bicycle Quarterly, Out Your Backdoor, and lots of great bike-style zines (good source - Microcosm Publishing). Nothing that you could get at Borders, but still lots of independent and "underground" publishing going on out there.

There's got to be some hipster/lifestyle/fixie magazine coming soon. I picked up a free copy of Fixed magazine, which claimed to be published by Animal NYC. Which could well be a so-called "custom publication" produced by an ad agency. I wouldn't be surprised if Puma paid a lot for it, but I don't know that. If not, well, that sure was quite a fawning profile of Team Puma.... In fact...I may have picked it up in a Puma store....

They're just like the gun rags--the mainstream ones only exist to sell ads, with the articles included as cool looking filler.

One of the few decent reads is Asphalt magazine (http://www.asphaltmag.com). I think they're still in business because their website is still up. Mainly for road riding and touring. Not at all like Bicycling.

Find some english bike magazines. They tend to lean more to the bike commuter.

I subscribed to Asphalt. I think I only got one issue in the past year.

Cycling Plus is a good one, from the UK. It costs 8 dollars at the newsstand here, no idea what a subscription would cost.

I also like Dirt Rag Magazine. I know you said you're not interested in mtn biking, but the focus of Dirt Rag is on riding, and they talk about lots of different types of bikes and rides.

Wow, those UK magazines look pretty good. I'm not in the mood to start any new subscriptions right now but I might look more closely at Velovision.

In general (not just for cycling), I have given up on magazines. I find books are a better value. I came to this conclusion when the average price for a magazine topped $5. Paper back books are actually cheaper if you figure the cost per page. They sometimes come with actual content too. :D

I thought about this for a while, and I think I'm in the same boat with bicycles as I am with cars. I used to drive a car every day, but I had no urge to buy a magazine about cars. I program for a living and spend a dozen hours a day on a computer, but I get no computer magazines. I picked up an issue of Bicycling once, and it 100% failed to interest me. Even if there were a magazine about commuting, I don't know what it would be good for. Pretty pictures maybe. As far as info goes, I get more than I need right here.

I'm about to let my next-to-last magazine sub (Sky & Telescope) drop, I haven't even taken the last 6 issues out of the plastic wrap. I actually used to get several magazines, but the web has supplanted almost all of them.

I did just subscribe to Make magazine, but I wish they had an electronic-only version, I don't really want the paper, just the contents.
