Mountain Biking - Went bike shopping with the in-laws today and...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

...they bought these. :) They wanted good hardtails for all-around riding and trail-riding (they are not geriatric: mid-40's).

She fell in love with the Marlin wsd right away and didn't try anything else, and for him we tried a Trek 4500/6500, and a Specialized Rockhopper before settling on the Tassajara. The Tass had noticeably more standover height than the other bikes, and he's on the shorter side. As you can see, I've de-reflectorized them already...

Bike shopping is fun. :D

Why would you de-reflectorize a bike that will be used for "all around riding?" If they were going to say on the trail exclusively fine, but if they will be ridden on the street I think it's a mistake.

Yeah, I've never gotten the point of dereflectorizing. I just got a wheel built from an old hub (on a wheel with a cracked rim and a reflector) and I got it back sans reflector. This was for my touring bike and I was mid tour. WTF?

That's good, but you are still missing something...

1. The usual reason (reflectors always end up breaking off if you ride enough, leaving debris in the trail, etc, etc)
2. Majority of bikes usage will be on trails
3. They won't be ridden at night
4. They asked me to

You are so right...there is way more to this world than trek. For instance - Gary Fisher. :p

Actually it's funny they both ended up with Fishers because I have one but was being careful to not sway them brand-wise at all. Just told them to go for whatever felt best (in the price range all the components were pretty similiar)...

The Rockhopper was a close second, but apparently the Tass felt lighter/nimbler, which pops liked.

Yessir, i won't deny it. I grew up with them and work at a Trek Concept store that sells nothing but Trek and Gary Fisher in terms of Mtn bikes.
