Well, actually, I don't have one, but after my "rookie" mistake yesterday, it should be if I did have one.
I was futzing around with my rear hub tring to decrease a friction point. In doing so, I did not push a seal completely back into place. On the way to work the next day (yesterday) I heard strange noises coming from the wheel. The noises weren't constant. I couldn't really do anything about it at the time, so I went on to work. After a while, I didn't hear anything anymore.
On the way home from work, I listened for noises, but nothing, so I pushed on.
Four miles from home and after a quick decent at 30+ mph on a road with some rough spots, I started up the other side of the hill, but found myself freewheeling. UH-OH! I have no transmission! I stopped, put my cleat covers on, called my GF to let her know that I was walking home. Two miles from home she picks me up--right on time, because I wore one cleat cover down so much that it kept falling off once in awhile. :mad:
So, what was wrong? The seal that I neglected to push into place had let the pawls fall out of place. When I opened the hub, two pawls were sitting in the bottom of the hub, two pawls were in another area of the hub, stuck in grease, and two pawls actually found their way out of the hub. I found these two stuck in my cassette. Luckily, the spacing between cogs was not great enough to let the pawls fall out.
So, after putting everything back together, including re-rounding the spring that engages the cam plate, and making sure that the seal is "captured" in the hub the way it was designed to be, the commute to work this morning went well.
