Bicycle Mechanics - Clicking Noise (hope you can help)

I have a 15 speed that make a clicking noise once every tire revolution and only when the chain is on the 4th sprocket (2nd smallest).

It does not matter what front sprockets is used.
It does not matter if I slightly change the rear derailer as I ride.
But, it does need some pressure, like going up an incline.
If I put the bike on a repair rack to test it, the noise is not there.

All this happened after I cleaned and greased the rear bearings and replaced the chain and Freewheel.

BTW:This bike is in very good shape, not a junker.

what sort of bike? is it an old touring bike or a mtb from walmart?

sounds like your chain is not mated to your freewheel. was one of them used?

Check your freewheel for bearing play. Often times the freewheels are slightly off center(very slightly) and with a bit of bearing play will make a bang or tick. If you can wiggle it not even the width of a cog, that is probbably it. The good news is they are adjustible. The bad news is I would not reccomend doing it yourself.

Thanks, but that did not seem to be the problem....

On Saturday, I went by 2 LBS and they had no answers.

I just bought a Trek and I also had a click.I found that it was the cable from the front Derailleur hitting the peddle crank. Good luck George;)

Nope... That was not it.
I took the freewheel off and used a drimal on that sprocket. just smoothed the out the rough stuff.
I noticed that the other sprockets on the freewheel were smooth down in the cogs but on that sprocket it was not.
The clicking has now changed, not very loud at all.
I think i'll work on it some more.

If I can't fix it i'll just order another freewheel.

I am actually haveing a similar problem with my K2.

I just bought it a month or so ago, but it has this slicking/popping sound coming from the general crankset area. It has gotten progressively worse with time, and I'm still not sure what it is.

The weird thing is it alternates between sides. it comes from the right side when I pedal with the right pedal, and then on the left side with the left pedal. It won't do the same side twice in a row.


According to the resources I checked it could be any one of a million things, so I am taking it to the bike shop tonight. Hopefully they will figure it out. I will let you know what they say, so maybe you have a better idea of what to look at.
