Commuting - Who else rides a Redline 925?

just wondering. i bought mine in Feb when it was 1st available.

Well, technically, I don't have a Redline 925. I built my own knock-off this summer, though. :D

I bought a 1980's steel road bike with horizontal dropouts for $15. Stripped it to the frame and built it back up as a SS. Redished the rear wheel and threaded on a 17t BMX freewheel. Installed a Shimano cartridge BB and 165mm cranks. Replaced the handlebars and single pivot brakes.

27x1 1/4 tires
Freddy fenders
48x17 gears
moustache bars
Shimano dual pivot caliper brakes

Only thing I'm really missing is the flip-flop hub. Its the original one sided hub. Maybe my bike is a little heavier too. I'm really happy with it. Lots of fun.

I had ordered one, but after two months of production delays I ended up with a Giant Bowery.
Similarites: single speed, compact frame, straight forks, flip flop hub
Differences: no fenders, drop bars, aluminum frame

I would love to get my hands on one but I would have to OK it with the Wife...not sure she is up for another bike in the house just yet.

That's what's good about my method. Bring it home as a $15 garage sale find that you just couldn't pass up. Then you can just sort of accquire the neccesary parts for the coversion one piece at a time over the next several months.

I just picked my Redline up last week. I have only managed to get about a hour of total riding time in on it. But so far I really like it. I bought it to take on the road with me as a cruiser/workout. I travel...alot and wanted the ability to ride when I was a way from home, to see the sights and just to keep riding. I am currently working from N Charleston, SC it is pretty flat down there so the fixed gear works great. I haven't made any mods yet, but a Brooks saddle and a Tubus rack are in the works. I got one of last one availble for this year. Fortunately for me all they had left were 60cm which is my size.:D

Do you drive or fly? If you fly, any hints on taking the bike with you without losing your shirt? I'd love to bring my SS along on week long (or more) business trips, but the airlines charge so much it makes it hard.

I drive. If I were flying I would have to spring for a Bike Friday. As far as I know they don't make a fixed gear, but there are ways around that:D Eventually I will get a BF probably the NWT model. But that is about $1200 down the road:p

I have one, it's my main commuter. I like it lots.

wahoonc, if you're riding fixed be sure to take off the lockring and cog and double check to see if the threads have been greased and that everything's tight enough. otherwise you might ruin the hub.

OHBOY more maintenance:p Thanks for the tip. I am still tweaking the set up on it so no big deal. Also looking at racks for it...I like the Tubus Fly, but still not sure I am going that route. I have the Brooks for it, just got to get it and the bike in the same state long enough to get it installed.

I'm getting a new IF bike, and I asked about SS couplers... they are EXPENSIVE! Add about $800 for the couplers and covers, then add about the same to do labor and figure in cable couplers and etc...

The guys at IF told me they made sense if I flew ALOT for work... I fly enough - but not enough to justify the cost. I spent the money on a Ti frame, otherwise I was looking at steel with couplers...


Look really cool - and the demo I saw of them looked solid and well done / engineered.

I have looked at the S&S couplers but can't justify the expense. To me a Bike Friday would be a better deal. Now on a big tandem or triplet, maybe. But not on something to just tool around on.

I'm 5'8" and got the 54. Wish I had the 56. They seem (from my expereince) to run small.

Wish I had the larger version to cut down on the toe overlap and to stretch me out a bit more. I'm going to a longer stem... but I feel cramped. (my road bike is a LeMond - so I'm used to a long reach)

Love it.
Been riding it SS around town. Need to try fixed.
Put a Brooks Team Pro on it, and swapped the bars for Nitto Moustache. (didn't like the stock bars...)
Added Brooks leather bar wrap, made a top tube protector with some leather...

Using the stock pedals with plastic half clips. Need to get some proper toe clips on it.

I have one ordered. I should have it in a week or two.

They do run small. My road bike is a 57 and fits nicely. In the 925 I bought a 60, as they 58 felt cramped. I am 6'1".

It's a nice bike, but you get what you pay for, and this was only $470. Solid frame, good wheelset, and a few nice "extras" that are not often included, such as pedals, fenders, good fat tires. The components, however, are a little cheap and nasty but can be upgraded over time. It's a good, inexpensive runabout bike.

best bike purchase i've made. quick, nimble, light, does the job with absolutely no hassles of any kind.

added a rack, lights, water cage, and switched the pedals to shimano clipless. everything else is stock and feels just fine. might change the handlebars to Nitto.... and want a Brooks saddle one day.

The more I see compact geometry and threadless stems, the more I don't want a new bike! No offense meant mind you, it's just personal taste.

yeah, I would have preferred to spend at least three times as much for a rivendell or something like that too.... but I didn't have that kind of money.

reasonably priced has its place. i can throw my redline around and not really worry about it.

Sure, but my Falcon Westminster was free, and could've been converted to Flip Flip ss/fixed for the cost of wheels. I'll happily leave it anywhere.......

my redline is a LOT of bike for the $400 i paid for it used. i considered a conversion, but there's no way i could have done one up to my standards for that price.

I'm just tight. Even $400 sounds like a lot to me, for a bike!

It took about 5-6 weeks for it to finally come in but I got mine. So far I love it. So much lighter than commuting on my touring bike and it just looks great. I put on some SPDs, set it up fixed, and dropped on and Ideale saddle a friend gave me along with some nicer bar tape. Here are some foto's....

Where did you get the bike? Can you give an idea of what you paid? And where you live?

I've had my 925 for 6 months now and can't live without it. This bike is pretty good, ive added spd clipless, and some vittoria 28's. I regularly pass just about everyone else who is commuting and hills are no prob once you get in shape. Got the bike for $400 its a 2007 and I love the 'stash bars. Only noticeable problems is that the hardware has rusted really quick, nothing major but kind of annoying. Also the stock tires have very little protection from any kind of penetration. I got a flat after 3 months, with my new tires I've had no problems and even run over some glass shards. The paint job can get chipped pretty easily as well. So far the bike is awesome and I commute everyday about 10 miles round trip with a nice long incline home. This bike got me back into biking!

I have a Redline 925, and honestly, I really hate it. It's solid enough, but it's really stiff, not terribly fun to ride, and I've had to replace a number of stock components very quickly. My bike shop said they had had a huge volume of faulty freewheels on the 925, of which I got one.
