Lemond Poprad disc 2006 or 2007 ?

My LBS can have a Lemond Poprad disc 2007 in 15 days, they have the 2006 of my size 52cm in stock.

The only change I see are :

2007 : 105 9 speed, Bontrager Jones CXR (never heard off), paint red

2006 : 105 10 speed, Bontrager Jones CX, paint orange


I don't care about the color, I hear 105 10 speed is less desirable in a cyclocross (dirt, is it a sale pitch?) Which one should I get ?

Any other good option with disc in the same price range (sub 2k), I don't want Cannondale.

Hello there, I was stumped with the same question. I ended up going with the 06 non-disk Poprad. The discs certainly look cool and have some advantages but the weight savings and wheel options for non-disk won in the end. I haven't picked mine up yet, but will post when I get a few rides in. Proabably be a week or so...my LBS had to order it.

Not sure if that helps. Oh yeah, the 06 was less money too, a definite factor. You should try and talk 'em down on the 06, especially since the 07's are already here.

I thought Redline made a version of the Conquest with disks. Maybe Diamondback carries one. I had a 2003 Giant that had the fittings for disks but I used cantis on it.
Don't know too much about 105 10 speed but some of the local guys were using 10 spd Dura Ace and they had good luck with the stuff.

maybe i'm talking outta my ***** here, but i just bought the 06 poprad non-disc first for what bkdelux mentions and second i heard (this is not substantiated) that lemond was having problems with the fork they were using on the poprad disc...like i said, i don't know if it's true, but i liked saving a few hundred bucks and having more wheel options with the non-disc.

Keep in mind the non-disk 2005 (which I have) can be near impossible to set up so it doesn't shudder hard with front braking. Its a real safety issue on my bike that I and LBS have been unable to fix thru all normal methods of adjusting brakes.

Hey Riders,

So, my Poprad arrived Friday...it's great. Nice steel feel, not to heavy, and certainly was a good buy. I'm real happy with my decision. I live in San Francisco and have already done some hills with no worries on the brakes. No wobbles or eratic tendencies.

Next I'll hook up some road wheels and tires and should be set. Pretty cool, now I have a bike for commuting, fire roads, and road riding.

Out of curiosity, how much do you weigh? I've been researching the Poprad and have seen a lot of dissatisfaction concerning the wheelset. Perhaps not a concern if you're a lightweight, but for a clyde like me it's something I've been thinking about.

I weigh about 185 now, but when I got my 2005 poprad weighed about 200. Not clyde weight, but the pounding I put on the wheels on singletrack made up for it. And my wheels not only held up, but didn't even need truing in the first year. By pounding I mean signficant drops, hitting large rocks, rock fields, etc.

I just experienced the shudder. It was a good downhill run and towards the end of braking the shudder began. I figure I will be changing rear pads more often, since I am now favoring them...

I don't think it will be an issue off road, just on pavement. I mean who brakes that hard with their front brake on dirt? You could spill real easy...

I change pads, tried (and still used salmon kool-stop), ensured the headset was tight, ensured the brakes were adjusted and lubed (the pivot points) right, tried toe in, tried excessive toe in, cleaning rims, tried different front wheels, etc. All this working with LBS where I bought bike with very experienced and knowledgeable technicians. But not matter what we tried nothing got rid of the shudder. And it is not a problem off road, but when I need to slow suddenly from over 20mph the shudder is so great it nearly throws my hands off the bars, or if a steep downhill can cause the front wheel to skip violently. Frankly it worries me and I consider it a serious safety issue with this bike. When I grab the front brake hard I can actually see the end of the front fork occillate about +/- 1/2"

I know wheelset are easier to find for non-disc, but I need to braking power, I hate the noise of canti brake and what they do to the rim...

My LBS sold the 2006, so I had to order the 2007, I was not impress with Lemond for going back to 9 speed cassette.. Well I just receive my Lemond Poprad 2007 and got some surprise.

First even if Lemond is saying it is a 9 speed cassette mine came with a 10 speed, very happy the part will be easier to find and replace as it wear down :D .

The bike also had Cane-creek cross-stop lever which I did not expect. Cane-creek headset instead of the Aheadset.

Tire were not Jones CX but Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase 700X32, not good for CX but OK for commuting. I was already ordering a second wheelset for commuting, well now it will be for CX.

I have put eggbeater SL on it and done my first ride ride (22km), did I say disc brake are awsome !

The only problem I have so far is removing all those sticker...

Sharp looking bike, congratulations! It's good to hear that they're still shipping with 10 speed drivetrains. Hope that's the way things stay and the 9-speed notation on their '07 website is just an oversight.

It's really odd that they would ship a CX bike with street tires, but how do you like the Bontragers that are on it? My Kona JTS came with Ravagozzi cross tires, but I want to switch to something more 'street friendly' when they wear out.

The Bontrager tire are not bad (keep in mind I have only 62km on them, no rain yet). They can be inflate to 110psi and still be confortable, rolling resistance is low (well not like a race tire but still low). I wish they were 28 to be able to do a good comparaison with other tire that I know, my first choice for commuter tire would still be Continental Ultra Gator skin 700X28

Just got back from my local Lemond dealer. According to them, they spoke with their Trek rep and as far as they know the 07 Poprad Disc will continue to be shipped as 10-speed equipped, contrary to what the 2007 Lemond site says.

In any event, I offered them $1700 cash for an '07 Poprad Disc and they turned me down saying the best they would do is $1899... So I thanked them for their time and left.

The $1700 would basically bankrupt me for the rest of the month (after I buy groceries.) $1899 would not only bankupt me, but I wouldn't be able to eat until sometime in August... So, no new bikes for me. :(

I ordered a 2006 Poprad Disc back in March. I had to wait until the middle of June for the 2007. I was told by trek that they had fork problems with the 2006 and basically scrapped the remainder of the 2006 model year for the 2007.

Mine also came with the Cane Creek components and the 10 speed cassette. I told my LBS that I had ordered a bike with a 10 speed cassette and unless there's a price break, that better be what I get. They said no problem, it'd have 10. Other people have to have been in my situation, so that might explain why they're shipping with 10 but advertising 9. It'll be interesting to see if the 10 speed holds out for the rest of the model year.

Mine came with the Jones CXR tires as advertised. Just FYI.

I like it so far. I fitted it with Time ATAC pedals. I'm having a hard time getting used to those. I have problems clipping in. A group of roadies pulled up behind me at a light . . . . . When it turned green, I dropped a foot past the pedal and touched the pavement. I heard laughter . . . lots of it. Gut check for the ego.

Practice track-stands. Then while the ass-hats are clipping in, you just crank the bars and go. That's what I do.

If you have problem with the track stand switch to eggbeater they are very easy to clip, sorry for your ego;)

I got my Poprad '07 Disc a few weeks ago. It came with the 10 spd cassette, the bont. cross tires and the cane creek tires. The bike took so long to come it (I ordered an '06) that I was upped a model year, but they charged me the '06 price.
Another question: My buddy has an '06 poprad with the carbon seatpost. He recently tried to adjust the height and the thing had rusted in place. (We got it loose, but it was a group effort) This got me thinking, should I treat the frame with frame saver? if I do, do I need to strip it down to the frame? Is there something I should put on the seatpost other than grease?

I'm 250 and the wheels are fine so far (200 miles, all road). I had to retrue the rear, but that's because I had an incident at a rest stop and needed to jam my heel into the wheel. Something to do with a 12 year old on a BMX bike. These dadgum kids these days. Those low spoke count wheels true alot easier than my 36 spoke jobbies.

I did not want a Cannondale because all their dealers (2) within 30KM offer poor support. Minor negative points where I did not like the gear ratio, the fork and the look (too many sticker and that color).

To quote that chicken farmer in "Napoleon Dynamite": "boy, I don't understand a word you just said."

1.) The carbon seatpost is non-metallic. It's a carbon composite-- it can't "rust". If you saw rust residue, it was from the steel of the seat-tube. Has he been abusing his bike? Soaking it and not taking proper care of it?

2.) DO NOT grease carbon seatposts. Not even a little film. Make sure the seat-tube and seatpost are clean and dry. Make sure that the seat-tube is free of burrs and other rough or sharp edges. Any scratching of the seatpost (or any composite component) will make it more likely to break along the scratch/score/gouge.

3.) Yeah, Frame Saver is a good thing for modern, thin-walled steel frames. Especially those. Still a very good idea for any steel frame except for weird department-store bikes...

You don't need to strip the frame completely. Just enough to allow you access to all tubes:
Remove bottombracket for access to chainstays, seat-tube and down-tube; remove fork for access to the top-tube and down-tube; remove seat post for access to the other ends of the top- and seat-tubes and the seat-stays. Also spray into the vent holes near the drop-outs. Do one tube at a time and roll the frame arond so you distribute the goo evenly and thoroughly.

I thought it fit pretty well, I had a little more seatpost exposed than I like and the seat to bar drop was around 80mm with a 100/10 stem. The shop does not have a 57 to try and they won't order one for me to try because the don't sell a lit of cross. A specialized tri-cross 58 seemed to fit me well.

I am 6'2" with a 33.5" true (not pants) inseam. A longer torso than average.
I ride a stock 57cm. Fits well.
