Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - What tools do I need to swap out my bottom bracket / crankset?

I'm going to be replacing an ISIS bottom bracket w/ a Sugino 75 and I need to figure out what tools I need. I was going to have my LBS do it, but they'll **** me with labor charges, I don't feel like driving to San Francisco, and I plan on purchasing a new frame soon which would mean paying someone to do it again.


I need to remove my Truvativ Elita crankset, remove the ISIS BB, install a Sugino 75 BB, and install a Sugino 75 crankset. And what do I need to do to prep the new to me (used) Sugino BB? What type of grease is appropriate?

That's it? I spoke with Marcus at Yojimbos and I swear he named 25 different tools. Well, it may not have been 25, but I'm sure mentioned more than three. I was going to order them from him, but thought it was going to cost me a lot so I decided against it.

So, I'll just need a Sugino (square taper?) compatible BB tool and an ISIS BB tool?

Marcus mentioned something about crank bolts being different sizes... 6mm and 8mm...?

I dunno about sizing, I seem to remember my Truvativ cranks and 75s being the same size.
But yeah, you need a nice, big hex-wrench for the crank bolts, too.

And, yeah, that's all you need.
Hex wrench, crank puller, splined BB tool - remove cranks and BB
Square taper BB tool - install Sugino BB
Hex wrench - Install new cranks.

Is the sugino BB splined the same as a Shimano BB? I use the ISIS tool pictured for square tapered BBs.

Yeah, that confused me too.
I use the pictured tool for square taper, too.
But Park says it's for ISIS.
But I definitely needed a different tool to remove my splined truvativ BB.
I dunno.

ISIS And Square taper also use different crank pullers. I believe Park makes one now that you can swap the plunger for either.
I didn't realize the 75BB is Cup and Cone.

Cup and cone, right.
You're looking at over $70 is tools, probably.
I mean, they're good to have.
But it's not going to be cheaper than paying for labor this one time.

I need a spanner wrench. I like bike tools.

Cool. I'll get this figured out. I just need to get started first...

I've removed 3 cup and cone BB's to replace them with modern cartridge BB's. I used a pipe wrench and extra large crescent wrench to remove the old cup and cone BB's. Only bought the proper tools for pulling the old crank and installing the new cartridge BB.

Also needed the appropriate wrench for tightening the crank bolts. Some are large allen wrenches some are regular metric bolts requiring a socket wrench. I think you are supposed to do it with a torque wrench. I just used two allen wrenches. One on each side and used them simultaneously.

Used a small crescent wrench for installing the pedals.

Yeah, removing ISIS, you wont need that crank puller I pictured.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. I called Freewheel in SF just to see what they'd charge for this, and I was quoted $25. Even if it's a little more than that, I'm thinking I'm better of just having them do it.

I'll probably pick up the parts soon though and maybe try this myself when I get my new frame.

Some people have experienced very short bearing life with ISIS BB's.

speaking of which, what kind of tools do I need to swap my handlebars and brake? I'm butying the IRO HOUR bike from ebay maybe and I want to know what I should set up with. and what color is good?
