I have been training quite hard for the last year looking to drop some weight and get back to racing Masters 40+ by the beginning of 2007..

One thing that I have been doing over that period of time is chewing sugarless gum, everyday.. It seemed to help with the cravings that hit all of us that are trying to stay on track and loose that extra weight that we seems to put on in our 30's and 40's..

About 8 weeks ago I started having considerable stomach problems. Like many people I would take a tums or something over the counter. I tried to alter my diet but nothing seemed to help. The acidic stomach was always there. It definitely made it so riding a bike became very unconfortable.. My family doctor finally sent me to a specialist and the 1st thing out of his mouth shocked me..

He asked a simple question that was the answer to all my stomach related problems.. The question, "do you chew more than a small pack of sugarless gum per day"? The answer of course was yes..

Believe it or not chomping on gum and especially sugarless gum is the cause of many stomach related problems. The mechanism of chewing caused you to swallow lots of air which causes lots of gas and bloating. In addition to this there is an additive, called "Sorbitol and Mannitol" that is in sugarless gum that just wrecks havoc on your stomach. The symptoms of too much sorbitol runs the gamet of all stomach related issues. These ingredients are sometimes disguised as "sugar alcohols" on the label.

I actually went to the Wrigley gum website and found that the gum I was chewing had, "Sorbitol, Mannitol and Aspertame as the main ingredients".. Basically the trifecta of bad for my stomach.

I have been gum free for just a few days and all my symptoms I have been living with for the last 2 months are just simply gone. I'm sure the specialist could have just prescibed Zantac or something else and would of dealt with the problem but I would still be dealing with a sour stomach day in day out. I'm glad he took the time to ask me that one simple question..

well I have been doing 4 small meals a day so I'm sure that is not it.. I chewed a lot of gum day in day out.. 5 sticks a day can cause distress while up to 15 can cause many other stomach problems..

I am going to try a couple of all natural gums.. I like chewing gum when I ride.. I am pretty much going to try to cut back on the gum chewing for now and see how I feel..

Just for your info, the FDA is now considering putting warning labels on products that contain sorbitol because of the stomach related issues that are arising from this sugar substitute..

Interesting. I like to chew gum when i ride too. However, once the speed cranks up and the HR goes up i spit it out. I've been chewing Orbit for some time now and dont notice any ill affects like you have. Maybe im conditioned since i've been drinking caffiene free diet Coke for some time now. One the other hand I only chew 1-2 peices a day. Drink more water. That'll help the cravings to some extent.

The best thing is to check the ingredients.. Trident gum last year stopped using sorbitol as a sweetener..

I am trying Glee gum which is natural when I ride..
