Hey guys and gals,
I'm looking at a couple of frame to build up a new commuter. I haven't been able to find much on either as far as commuting, so I figure I'd ask the experts. First, the commute: 5 miles one way, urban, lots of up and down. The roads are so-so. And every once in a while I like to stretch it out on the way home. Second, the requirements: rear rack mounts, wide enough for fenders and 32's, 700c wheels, canti's or disc's (because I have both on hand). I carry a set of panniers with a few books, maybe a laptop, change of clothes, extra shoes.
I'm looking at either a new cross bike or an older tourer. For cross bikes I'm looking at the Nashbar frame ($250 or so w/fork), the Flyte cross frame (about the same), and the Motobecane Fantom Cross ($650 complete bike). All of these are aluminum which is just fine. I already have a steel roadie, and I want this one to be stiff, light, and fairly durable. My concerns with the Moto are that I can't tell if it has seat stay eyelets (I'd prefer them). I can go ride one by the way, there is a Cyclespectrum store about 2 hours away.
I'm also looking at picking up an old C'dale tourer or the like on eBay. Components really aren't a big deal, I've got lots laying around. I like sprucing up old bikes too.
Couple of things I've already ruled out:
Seatpost racks. I hate them. Need one?
Surly Cross Check. I know someone will suggest it. I had one, wasn't crazy about it.
