Mountain Biking - AVID BB5 Disc Brakes ROck!!! SRAm too

Just wanted to share my opinion that the avid bb5 disc brakes that came on my 06' hardrock pro are the best brakes I have had. WHile the hayes nine hydraulics I used to have had greater stopping power, they always rubbed and always needed adjusting.

My avids were rubbing just a tad bit, all I had to do is reach down and twise the red knob, no tools required, just my fingers. fixed the problem right up. also you can control the clearance gap really easily both ways and now I have my levers and clearance set perfect for me.

I just wanted to share that Avid is A+ in my book.

-Also, compared to shimano, I love the sram components. I have a x7 rear derailer and xgen up front, and couldn't be more happier with their flawless performance. Maybe in the future I will upgrade to x0s, but for now I love everything about my bike.

Yes, most here agree that Avid mechs are good brakes for beginners.

Yeah I love my BB5s though I wish they were BB7s, the inside pad is now rubbing against the rotor badly and I don't know how to fix it, though I'm not sweating it, one is because I can't ride and the other is because I'm letting my LBS worry about it lol.

All you have to do is twist the red knob counter clockwise to get it off the rotor.

-Question, what is modulation? how is modulation measured as good or bad?

yeah I know cmktech, the BB5s only control the inside pad (I meant outer on my last post) while the BB7s have dials for both pads, after a crash yesterday which also left my hand injured, the outer pad (the one that moves or master one) moved inwards, there is nothing I can do to prevent rotor rubbing since I can't move that pad.

Modulation is just how much you can control (or modulate) brake efficiency before wheel lock-up, a clear example of a brake without modulation would be Magura HS-33 on ground rims and grabby pads, a pull of the lever and your wheel is locked (this is good for what the brakes are meant for... trials) and you really have not much choice between a full lock up and no brake at all, this is ZERO modulation, this type of brake would suck in any other application since your wheel would lock, you would skid (or probably endo if its front) and you would be in dangerous situation but its obviously very favorable for trials.

A brake with tons of modulation can control your speed very well and is obviously preferred for every other discipline, the intensity of the brake will vary depending on the input at the lever and the wheels will slowly stop until wheel lock up, however modulation should not be confused with power, HS-33s have LOTS of power when combined with ground rims and grabby pads but their modulation sucks.

Modulation is always a good thing to have so the more the better, the only place where one wouldn't like (or maybe just even care) for modulation would be trials where the only thing you need to worry about is being able to lock the wheel nice and tight so it doesn't slip.

I've had a great experience with Sram Derailleurs, and Avid disc brakes. However, I'm not a big fan of Rockshox. I don't doubt their ability, but I find they look very feminine, and they havent got many 'longer travel' single crown forks(like the 66 or Fox 36).

I'm a big fan of them actually and have them up there alongside Marzocchi and Fox as my favorite fork companies, Manitou is not one of them, I like my RockShox Tora very much and before that I owned a RockShox Indy SL, both very solid forks, as for your single crown long travel complain... well thats what the new Totem and Lyrik forks will be for with their new Mission Control damping, man they look so impressive.

It's a bit late for an introduction to a longer travel fork. Rockshox has kind of lagged behind that way. As I said before, I don't doubt their ability, I just hate their looks! :p

About 2 weeks ago i posted that i really liked my bb5's (still do) and couldnt see any need to upgrade them. Something along the lines of "screw the high end hydros" or something to that effect. Since then however ive had the chance a couple of times to ride a bike with some hydros (XT), and really, its just no contest. Modulation was similar, but the hydros stopped better. What really got me though was the feel at the lever....that right there is worth the extra money imo. A set of XT hydros have gone right to the top of my "to buy" list. I tried some juicys too and found that the XT's had a more linear lever grab compared to the juicys more progressive grab. Maybe i was imagining it, but the XT's just felt better to me.

I'm still trying to figure out what makes RS look gay? To be honest, they all look very similar across all the brands to me.

Yeah hydros feel so nice at the lever and braking is so effortless, besides I understand set up is easier, I want something like Avid Juicy, their CPS and lever reach knobs and ergonomics and whatnot seem to good to pass up for just a little more power.

However until I have the chance to upgrade my BB5s will do the job since they are adequate for all my needs.

For Beginners? They work great for anyone that want a low maintance disk brake. I've set up Avid's and they work just fine. I got rid my hayes HFX-9 for MX-1 this year and the stopping power I lost was not a issue for me. My downhill days are behind me. And I got tired of bleeding my brakes. I do it to much already at work.

Your views seemed to have changed slightly after seeing the Totem & Lyrik eh? ;) Man, those will be two kickass forks, especially the Totem... U-Turn, 135-180mm of travel if I recall correctly and 40mm stanchions. :D

Looks the same to me. But to each thier own.

Can you run larger tires with Rockshox forks? My Z1 fr3 has rub with my 2.6 inch tire, and it's not just barely rubbing either, it basically took a chunk out of my fork.
