I just got home Thursday from a conference in Seattle, WA. It was the first time I'd ever been there. After my initial bliss over the cool temeratures, the next thing that impressed me about the place was the number of bicyclists!
The entire downtown area of Seattle is blessed with a HUGE assortment of bicyclists! I enjoyed looking at all the unusual bikes almost as much as I enjoyed my conference. I noticed that between a third and a half of all the cycles I saw sported fenders! I'm sure this must be because of the rainy climate. I also noticed that most of the bicyclists I saw sported "monster hams" for thighs (undoubtedly a byproduct of those monster hills that are everywhere).
Most of the bicyclists seemed to fit right in with the local bus, car, and motorcycle traffic. The only crazy bicyclists I saw appeared to be bicycle messengers. I don't know what those kids are on, but since they seem to have no cares, it must be the good stuff!
In any case, given the high real-estate values in Seattle, I won't be retiring there, but it sure is a great place to visit! Thanks to all the friendly bicyclists of Seattle who made it great fun to visit that city.
