anyone know of a good wheel builder in portland oregon? i am looking to have a wheel set handbuilt, not on a machine.
Stop by a few shops in your area and see how you personally feel about the people there.
All shops build wheels if you buy the stuff separate.
However nothing wrong with machine built. That is what nearly all those wheels people buy mail order that think are hand built. Matter of fact some machine built wheels are better than what some shops build.
If you do buy from a shop and having any problems quickly contact them to see what is up. Do not wait months to tell them the wheel went bad. It is too late then.

If you cannot find a decent builder in your area try www.gravywheels.net if I was unable to build my own wheels then I would let Steve Gravenites do it. He has a ton of experience and can build anything you want, he can also assist you on suggestions for the build. The obvious consequence is that you will not get free truing from the local shop since they didn't build them. But hey this will give you a chance to learn to true them yourself, then maybe someday you can build your own wheels - few things are more rewarding than cruising down the street on a machine you built from the frame up with wheels laced by your own hands. But seriously, if the local shops aren't capable then check out gravy - they will set you up right.
