Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - DC Pirates in WP

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

In an article about a guy who built his first fixed gear (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/06/15/AR2006061501749.html -- pretty boring unless you want to hear about how much money he spent for each part), BF's own DC Pirates got a big mention, including a link to their thread and a description of pillaging. Maybe next week they can have pictures of drunk riding!
"Plus, as I passed a couple of messenger-types picnicking in the sun, one called out 'Nice fixie!', which was promptly followed by snorting peals of laughter. They followed it up with, 'Off to the poserdrome?'

Can someone scan up the photos that clearly didn't make it into the online article? Puh-leez? The reporter took several photos of Janie...

Sorry, no photos of Janie :-(
Just photos of:
Marc Daniels, Kenny Kodner, Amanda Rawson, Cody Rice, & Ronald Flores with their bikes.

This the Sunday Source we are talking about. Let's not get our expectations too high. I think you lose two hardcore-fixie-kid points for even admitting you read it.
Normally, I would sit on the sidelines for something like this, but Jim (the author--he's not a WaPo reporter, by the way) is a friend of mine. Jim admittedly doesn't know the strict mores of the one-speed culture. He is, however, a strong as hell rider that knows his way around a bike. For better or worse, this was the angle for the article.
We were laughing about what the track-bike-crowd response to the article would be, and I have to say, this is about what he expected. Just keep in mind, you were not the intended audience.
For what it's worth, he did enjoy hanging out with the pirates and thought you all were a pleasant and inclusive crowd. aarrgghh, indeed.
cheers.
Schiek.

hey, hey now. i think spud was just being goofy. it's a cool article that someone could use as a how-to to cheaply build a bike they could ride and love. and who's against ride-love? i mean, really?
the reporter was a super-friendly guy, and it's cool that he tipped his hat to the pirates with that mention.
It's a track bi....I MEAN, A TRAP!

+1 jim's ok in my book. hope he can make it out again when he's all healed up. spud can certainly speak for himself, but i don't think he meant anything really nasty by it.

I don't think there is a journalist alive who could write a story on "fixed gears" and "fixie culture" and have it be accepted in these parts.
I'm a journalist and I know I'd never write one, although I did do a story on Milwaukee's resurgent Critical Mass last summer.
I guess it's just the nature of "sub-culture."

There also is a graphic in the print copy I have. Jim list his resources including Sheldon Brown, FGG, and BF. His article would helps someone "get fixed" if they wanted to.

My dad mentioned that article to me when I called him yesterday. "Nothing you wouldn't already know."

For the general public, this was good light Sunday afternoon reading. Spreading the love over the various LBS's in DC was good service. The french BB experience was a "we saw that one coming" for most of us but a caution to other fanciful dreamers. Something on suicide hubs would have been welcomed. Hope Jim enjoys his new ride.
btw: Wed night, during the "longest day" pillage, someone in a white SUV shouted "PILLAGE!" at the bunch of us.

I wonder what shop it was that put the wrong size post in the frame. That is a pretty bad mistake.
EDIT: chain reaction, they're non-profit so I guess it's ok

CR has boxes of old used parts, whatever, they can make fit!
"Plus, as I passed a couple of messenger-types picnicking in the sun, one called out 'Nice fixie!', which was promptly followed by snorting peals of laughter. They followed it up with, 'Off to the poserdrome?'
after which those messenger-types all walked their bikes home to the internet to post about the loser who rode a conversion.

Don't hate yourself, it's mostly the bike.:p

See! Not one of the messenger-types is riding. All holding or sitting with the bike.

For the record I believe i just got done with a 20+ mile ride when that photo was taken. Also I think photons blew me off for the ride to go get drunk. I think we both won.
