Apparently it's been in the UK for at least a year. Formula hubs: good call. Bashring: Why?
Still waiting for one of these name-brand SS/fix bikes to come stock with bullhorns... only a matter of time.

Perhaps this (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=paddy+wagon) is what they are referring to when they say Paddy Wagon is racist.

actually, the irish haven't been white for very long, much in the same way that jews and italians weren't white until, oh, the 1960's and 1970's.

"Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died is a night i'll never forget,
some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't got sober yet,
as long as a bottle was passed around every man was feeling gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes some music for to play
That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy
That's how they showed their honor and their pride
They said it was a sinner's shame and they winked at one another
And every drink in the place was full on the night Pat Murphy died"

cop is also a derogatory term. stems back to when all of the police officers' badges were made of copper.
i should probably also mention that i don't actually give a **** about any of this. i'm just mentioning useless stuff.

I rode one of these yesterday. They look pretty decent in person. Nice fork, comfortable geometry. The bars, levers and cranks feel (and look) like cheap crap. The pedals that were on it were mtb platforms sans clips/straps, which seemed pretty dumb to me. I'm not sure if they ship like that or if they come pedal-less and the shop just threw those on so they could ride it around the block. In any case, it's a fun little ride and would probably make an excellent commuter or foul-weather bike.
Sticker price was $750CDN, but my LBS is not known for its rock-bottom pricing so you will probably be able to find them much cheaper elsewhere. I'm swollen with Canadian pride.

I looked at one (didn't ride it) a few days ago.
Here's what I think
crowned steel straight blade fork = the sex
steel frame = heavy (this ain't a light bike)
braze on's for fenders = the forsighted (way sweet)
tire clearance, didn't really look, don't know what max size fendered or unfendered is.
The fork is just way sweet though.

I work in a shop and we just got a full size run of these. They come w/o pedals so whatever they put on was probably just for test rides (when I couldn't find a set of test ride pedals, I once put a set of downhill pedals on a tricked out road bike).
I like them, for the money, I think it's a nice ride.

Hello: I thought the name was a little odd, too, but was looking at a Kona UK site, and read that the Paddy Wagon's designer is a guy named Paddy White, who I'm guessing has some Irish blood in him.

I remember seeing in a Kona catalog something about how people think they're Canadian but aren't.
This does not prevent me from believing them to be Canadian, but somehow gets me to reply to messageboards to say that they're not.

the reason that no one is screaming racism about paddy wagon is because who cares about the irish? they're just a bunch of drunk potatoe eating lepricons.

isn't pake a hawaiian slur for whites or something?
Don't hat on Kona, they make good bikes which is more than you can say for a number of these companies, Raleigh, Schwinn for instance. Those companies went out of business long ago, anything that now carries is the name is simply someone repackaging the cheapest stuff they can get and selling it for as much as they can in the wrapping of a real company.
Wait...Thats what Trek does.
Giant frame, Shimano parts, lots of hype.
I would be interested to see the bike up close. The bashguard seems unecessary, though it it goes on both sides it might serve some purpose.
road brakes are not as efficient as cantilever or v brake but they used to run them on cyclocross so that doensn't necessarily exclude it from being a cross bike.
Aesthetically, I am not such a fan of the compact frame. The brakes are nice, formula hubs are a good move but I would really like to see the cog/cogs and a few other details.
What is the price like?

Kona traditionally named all of their bikes for elements of vulcanology, in a variety of languages.
So they are often words for lava, crater, volcano etc.
But I have always been impressed, maybe this will lift my spirits from the dissapointment over the Jamis Sputnik. (insane weight).

Oh, yeah. check the history of Irish recognition as human.
It's pretty bad, they were the lowest in the world till the age of exploration when other europeans found other people to prey on. In the NY of the 1840's they were regarded as animals and were often considered to be uneducatable and thus below blacks.
f'ed up what we do to each other.
Speaking of racism, my friend is going to Japan for a visit, she is not Japanese and thus had a fun time being treated badly when she was a kid*. As a distraction I have asked her to buy some stuff for me.
Dura ace high flange hubs, anything bike related stuff would be fun.
any recommendations on what she should buy, or where?
She will be in Tokyo.
*I ought to point out that my family is partly japanese, so I am talking culture, not blood.
RedDeMartini: this is the second time I've seen you complain about the Sputnik. It is listed at 16.5 lbs, which, while not super light, is less than most of the bikes in this class. What's the big deal?
actually, the irish haven't been white for very long, much in the same way that jews and italians weren't white until, oh, the 1960's and 1970's.

As I said might've said previously, the crankset looks/feels cheap up close. The chainring and bashring are bolted on, so no swapping unless you want to ditch the entire crankset.
It's probably a given that there are going to be things you'll want to replace pretty quickly on any off-the-shelf, complete, entry-ish level bike, so the crummy crankset isn't a deal killer. At least the wheelset is solid.
RedDeM: My LBS has a sticker of $750cdn on it, which means you could probably find it much cheaper elsewhere.

Pake means "cheap", and can be used as a slur. Pretty sure they meant "cheap" with the frame though. Wasn't there a whole other thread about this?

Kona site says $649. You work at a shop though, so *wink* *wink*.

Kona has been making a single speed since the early 90's. I'm sure more than one was converted to fixed. I saw more messengers riding Kona mtb's ten years ago (mountain bikes were the messenger bike of choice at on time) than any other brand. Looks like the wagon caught them.
