I like to wear these they are like a hiking water shoe with screens and vents. It is really nice because my feet get hot easily http://www.teva.com/

I do it everyday. It depends on your shoes. I ride sockless so that I only need one pair and that one pair doesn't get all sweaty. I do use clipless (Lake) and only ride a short distance, but it'll be fine, you might actually enjoy the extra ventilation of no socks.

I've ridden sockless before. No problems to speak of during the 17 miles. It does feel a little strange.
Yes, I ride clipless.
I have a thing against wearing calf length dress socks with cycling shorts.
It was early spring and I wore tights in and cycling shorts back. Forgot the proper socks.

i usually ride sockless during the hot days to keep a little cooler. weird at first as most will say. tend to over tighten my shoes though

I used to do my ol (ten years ago) commute in Tevas. It was only 3-5 miles (I moved partway through that job) each way, though. Heck I'd do the Tevas on Look pedals on the road bike in those days if the other bike (with toeclips) was in need of work.

I used to ride sockless all the time in my clipless shoes. My shoes were lightweight Shimano road shoes, so plenty of venting

Yes, you will be fine!

All the time. In fact, I go sockless almost all the time during the summer. And when I do wear socks, they're really short thin synthetics.

I went sockless for years, but the smell [same shoes for mtn biking, commuting and road riding] got to me. Now I wear socks all the time. In fact, it's the same type of socks - Ultimax black liner socks. They also work great as dress socks for work.

yeah, one of the main reasons socks are good is because they prevent your shoes from absorbing your sweat too much and getting stinky.

Dude, it was more than sweat - I do a bit of backcountry riding, and there's inevitably some sort of nasty bog to walk through, and that bog is frequented by cattle. Cattle relieve themselves in bogs. I'm sure of it. You can air out those shoes, light them on fire, it doesn't matter - they will smell. Bad.

Well, I made it home.
I think I prefer socks.
No problems, just would rather have socks wet with sweat than my shoes. Although, don't both of them get wet with sweat anyway?

I tried it once with road shoes. Not comfortable. :(
I got these (http://www.lakecycling.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=LXSDL) last week and now ride clipless and sockless every day. Ah, nice cool feet. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/happy/059.gif

I hate socks. So I never wear them in the summer. Not when walking, not when sleeping, not when riding my bike.

Good thing my feet don't sweat too much. :)

The only time I use socks is when it is below 55F

yeah, one of the main reasons socks are good is because they prevent your shoes from absorbing your sweat too much and getting stinky.

Not just sweat but bits of organic matter (skin) that will draw microbes that feed on on them and produce their own stink. Socks can go into the wash but the best you can do with most shoes is warm them up enough to kill the critters, as I discovered when I had to get rid of the scabies. Exposing them to sunlight is good for getting rid of most unwelcome guests.

Definitely - problem solved for eliminating many kinds of bacteria developing in sweaty bike clothes, swimming trunks and towels, and wet sandals. Works well for stinky bike shoes too (old Shimano M-80s).

No socks here either, just platform pedals and Birkenstocks.

Socks can go into the wash but the best you can do with most shoes is warm them up enough Um, I actually throw my running shoes into a washing machine on a regular basis. And I don't wear any other shoes on my bike (well, sandals as well).

As for stink... my boyfriend always wears socks with his shoes. And yet his shoes STINK ***BAD*** a lot of the time. I don't wear socks - and get no stink. But then I don't sweat much in general either. I hardly even sweat in hot saunas!

Any footgear will absorb sweat through the sock if worn. The sock picks up the dead skin sloughing off the foot due to friction. It's a good thing. Socks add longevity to your footgear be they sandals or combat boots.

I currently use Sette spd sandals sold at PricePoint. I also use Ban Rollon Anti-Perspirent on the dogs. My feet sweat like the proverbial pigs that they are.
My feet only get wet when it rains. I also wear socks in the sandals. I am a sight to see on my commute to work.

Sette sandals are well made and have the loop on the heel strap to set the sandal without having to undo the Velcro instep strap like the Lake sandal. This will add life to the footgear by not wearing out the Velcro to just put on the sandals. I don't think Shimano sandals have the little loop on the back of theirs.

Not if I can help it, I have a mild foot neuropathy. I even need to sleep with socks on. If you want to be a Shoeless Joe, find a shoe with a smooth cloth/tricot lining.

use febreeze on stinky shoes. I tried washing (and even drying them) but it didn't work. Febreeze took all the stink out.

Hey, I just noticed kcmrl is in Tuscon.
In that case sockless once in a while with shoes is likey to be OK even more so as they air pulls moisture out so well.
I use spd sandals always sockless, recommended for year round in the desert.
