So I ordered a large reclining couch, bed, mattress, and tv entertainment center from one place and a 56" tv from another place. They're both gonna arrive on friday and there's a stupid s-bend in the hallway so we have to get everything in through the 1st floor front window, which is big enough.

I figure the furniture would take about 30 min to get in there and the tv about 5-10 min.

I already paid for shipping though so do I really need to leave a tip?

Those delivery guys receive wages that are not adjusted down for tip compensation. Nothing wrong with leaving a monetary tip, but I usually just leave cold soft drinks/water and snacks.

I usually don't tip for non-food delivery. those guys tend to make decent cash. I know, I used to work as a furniture deliverer during my jo-job days.

On the other hand, we did appreciate some ice cold sodas, and maybe a snack...we did work pretty long hours. usually around 12-14hrs a day....so anything to help take the edge off was greatly appreciated.

In NYC, you tip. Depends how heavy the stuff is, how difficult it is to get it into your apartment, and how much damage they don't do. I'd say $10 per guy minimum, off the top of my head.

I"ve never tipped a furniture delivery guy! Figure if I gotta pay for delivery, than that is that. Same goes for Pizza. If they charge for delivery, than I don't tip.

I always tip for food delivery. No matter what! If you ever plan on ordering food delivered from them (same place)again, you should too! IT's better to give a couple of dollars than have your food messed with. And trust me...that stuff happens. Don't be a *ick to your food delivery person!!

Now furniture....I always been charged a delivery fee for furniture. BUT. If they do a good job bringing it in and setting it up, I usually give them $10- $20 each and offer them a cold beverage when they are done.

Wow, I have nevered tipped the delievery guy for furniture. Yes, food but not for something like that. I just learned something new.
I would leave them $10 if the furniture was heavy, but nothing less then $5.

hummm... good question... 15% is minimum for food sevices and sevices as a hairdresser for example, but I have never heard of tipping someone who moves your furniture! never!

Well she's got the better chest and I've got the better butt. Why give them a picture when I'm there in person... *shudder* forget I said that...

Better yet, she should let them in and you go hide in the closet w/a camera.

That's disgusting... on the bright side she might have one or two of her friends stay the night in the new apt.

I think I'll just give em 10 bucks, I already paid hundreds for the damn shipping.

I got a bed delivered, and the guys left without even looking at me. I even had my wallet out. So maybe you don't tip, at least in OK.

Most delivery guys don't expect it. And some employers get pissed if they ever got wind of it. The furniture place I worked at that time was one of those firms....they said "no tips"...it wasn't heavily enforced, but if they got wind of you getting a large tip (one guy got $100 once), and they confirmed it, you were fired, no questions. Apparently they had a problem in the past of some of the guys soliciting tips in a less than polite manner, thus the rule.

Either way, a nice cold can of soda was a darn fine tip...being out in a truck with no a/c, and having to deliver furniture in upwards of mid-90 degree temps was a huge pain in the rump.

I wonder if beer's a good idea... considering, you know, they're DRIVING...

I don't see how they can **** with your food given that they deliver and then it's on your fricking table before you give them the money.

Gonna hide in the closet w/ the camera? Or just setup a hidden camera w/ a remote control?

Was renting a $30 van and picking it up yourself an option?

Yeah but when it's 85 and humid outside, I'd rather have someone else do the heavy lifting. Plus it was like 120 for the van.
