Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bikes on JetBlue

I'm heading back to NYC for July and bringing my bike one way or another. I was wondering if anyone had experience baggage checking a boxed bike on JetBlue. I'm not worried about weight (19 lbs.) or size (27"x36"x10", less if I remove cranks), and I know how to properly box a bike, but...well, have any of you trusted your beloved bike to JB baggage handlers before? Should I just eat the $50 and UPS it? Share experiences, drop science. Thanks.

if you do ship.. fed ex ground is super cheap.. adn they havent lost a bike on me yet. But im sure it'd be fine on the plane

you'll probably have to pay to have it shipped on the plane anyway, so if you trust fed ex or ups more might as well do that.

yeah i just shipped 3 bikes from wisconsin to maine for $74 round trip fedex ground. now i get some excelent shipping rates through work but even without the discount it comes out to about $50 round trip for 1 bike.

whoa, i just shipped 2 bikes (1 track bike and 1 bmx) in the same box from austin to nyc through ups with 1k in insurance and it was 133 bucks. I was pissed it was so much but i figured any other shipping company would be about the same and i didnt want to hastle with the airport and trying to handle all my bags and a huge ass bike box. im gonna fed ex it next time.

i'd also fedex it. i've shipped 4 or 5 bikes via fedex ground and the most i've ever paid is around $35. that was for a huge and heavy mountain bike. pack it well, use the smallest box you can, make sure someone is there on the other end to receive it, and you should have no problem.

If you have one of those bike cases/bags thingamajigs do you have to pay the extra fee on airlines that is incurred when using a bike box?

jet blue charges $50 each way for your bike box. they also open it and check it out about 3 different times resulting in a scratched bike.

FedEx Ground is the best thing since sliced bread. Relatively cheap, and I've not yet had a problem with them (as opposed to UPS who apparently employ Magilla Gorilla as a package handler.)

At UPS, the internal company slang for package handlers and sorters is "TOSSERS."
