Touring - LBS in San Diego area
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We'll be shipping our bikes to the San Diego area in preparation for our ride back home to Colorado Springs. The plan is to ship them to a LBS and have them reassemble and check things out. I'd appreciate any suggestions from a local (or someone with experience with a SD shop). We'll actually base out of a town north of SD, near Escondido. The web shows 3 shops nearby - California Chalet, Hidden Valley Bike Store, and Performance (which I found out has been closed for some time).
Thanks for any help you can give me.

REI has an Encinitas shop, rather new. If you go into your local REI they will box and ship it to another store for $70 inclusive. When it arrives at the other store they will reassemble it for $30. Not a bad deal all around.
Hollands Bikes in Coronado is a great shop...but a bit of a hike from Escondido.

Rancho Bernardo Bikes (Cyclery?) is pretty good. Not a big shop but the skill level is good. They are a couple of exits south of Escondido.

I agree about Holland's on Coronado...that's my LBS, even though it's 10 miles away from my house. If youre doing some sight seeing in SD area, I'd suggest Hollands.

I dont know about the brown field thing. Sorry. I live in I.B and commute to Coronado daily, that's about it for now. 2 little girls keep me from venturing away...that's why I commute on bike, gives me an excuse to ride.

Hollands bike shop in Coronado. Good place. Was doing a little sight seeing in Coronado last week and rode down to Silver strand beach. My next trip is definately to IB from the Oceanside amtrak station.
Hey So Cal commuter, any tips on places to eat/stay in IB for the budget minded bike tourer?

Yup! Hollands has been around forever. I was born in Coronado and my first bike came from Hollands. They were always having to fix or replace my rims because I was notorious for riding over curbs. That was back in the 60's and 70's, so if longevity of service is worth anything, Hollands is a winning shop!
